Hollywood sure knows how to get hot and heavy. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 sexy movie scenes.
For this list, we’ve chosen film sequences we’ve deemed sexy, whether they involve sex or not, because, as we all know, suggestive dialogue or behavior can also work wonders.
#10: Pottery Wheel
If there’s a standout moment from this ‘90s romantic fantasy about a ghost trying to protect his lover, it’s this one. A pottery wheel may be what we see on screen, but pottery is hardly what Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are really making here; this interlude with the two of them working on a piece of clay is not only expressive but strangely erotic. The sequence has been parodied countless times since, but it remains a classic movie scene that is as sexy as it is heartbreaking.
#9: Rollercoaster Climax
In this scene from the American thriller, Mark Wahlberg takes Reese Witherspoon on a roller coaster - but who knew it would end up being a completely different kind of ride! While gentlemanly at first, the intense David McCall soon shows his predatory side when he reaches under Nicole’s skirt and goes to work. Set to The Sundays’ version of “Wild Horses,” the sexual tension is irresistible but also has a touch of malice.
#8: Black Swan / White Swan
It’s no surprise that this creepy-but-still-sensual scene came from the imagination of director Darren Aronofsky. There’s something about Natalie Portman’s “white swan” Nina running from her mother and taking Mila Kunis’ “black swan” into her bedroom that adds a psychological edge to things. The two ballerinas’ passionate make-out session also marks Nina’s mental breakdown, though teenage boys around the world were probably too distracted by the girl-on-girl action to notice.
#7: The Handprint
For those who grew up in the late ‘80s and ‘90s, this moment from the epic romantic disaster flick is when they first learned about sex. Jack and Rose are running across the ship, trying to find a place where they can be alone and free from watchful eyes. Finally, they find refuge in a car inside the cargo hold, while a hand’s palm mark on the sweaty window broadcasts the interior’s increasing temperatures. The scene transcends sex into passionate love, and even if the Titanic was sinkable, we know that Jack and Rose’s love wasn’t.
#6: Kiss in the Rain
There are few things more romantic than a big fight on a canoe in the middle of a thunderstorm. Especially when it is resolved with a wet, passionate kiss. After Allie accuses Noah of not writing her all this time that they didn’t see each other, their heated fight is quickly ended when Noah grabs her and kisses her. Thanks to their intense chemistry, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were rewarded with an MTV Award for best kiss - and when they acted it out again onstage while accepting their prize, we all swooned.
#5: Fields of Wheat
Can we agree that rain is just so sexy? When Jonathan Rhys-Myers’ and Scarlett Johansson’s all drenched characters go for a walk in a wheat-field, they just can’t help themselves. Though he’s a tennis coach set to marry a British aristocrat, he finds himself immediately drawn to the already-engaged Nola Rice, who is a struggling young actress. The scene from the drama is charged with eroticism partly because the twosome knows what they’re doing is wrong, considering their circumstances. Woody Allen rarely shows sex on film, but with such a good-looking cast, he had to throw us a bone.
#4: Memories of a Tryst
Nostalgia can be sexy too. Especially when a guilty-looking housewife, played by Diane Lane, is remembering the ardent love affair she had with a handsome stranger played by Olivier Martinez. We see how the whole thing went down through flashbacks, as she tries to keep her cool while she’s at home with her arguably less sexy husband, portrayed by Richard Gere. Eventually, she realizes that stability is better than lust, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting the affair, which didn’t only allow her to completely lose herself but allowed us some sensual escapism that we still can’t get out of our minds.
#3: Young Love
Though this romantic drama received some criticism for its extensive lovemaking scenes between Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos, we’re sure director Abdellatif Kechiche still had a grand time shooting them. Telling the beautiful love story of two young women, it’s in the much-praised film’s first 7-minute-long sex scene between them that we really see the passion that brings them together. The segment also challenged how lesbian sex was previously portrayed in cinema, as fighting stereotypes proved to be sexy in and of itself.
#2: Sex & Grief
This sequence is proof that a good sex scene goes beyond the chemistry between the actors. Although the lovemaking between Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie itself is very hot, and rumored to not have been acting at all, it is the editing that gives this intimate moment from the thriller its sexiness and realism. Since it is intercut with shots of the husband and wife getting dressed, we are able to glimpse the satisfaction they both feel.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- Lovemaking in the Library
“Atonement” (2007)
- Betty & Rita: Have You Ever Done This Before?
“Mulholland Drive” (2001)
- Hotel Striptease
“Out of Sight” (1998)
- The Interview
“Basic Instinct” (1992)
- The Bet
“Cruel Intentions” (1999)
#1: Champagne Showers
Quite a lot happens around the pool in “Wild Things,” but the sexiest moment is, of course, the threeway scene between Neve Campbell and Denise Richards’ characters. In this twisted thriller, Campbell and Richards play two students who accuse their high school guidance counselor of rape. Except neither of them is as innocent as they seem. There isn’t much else to say, except for the fact that we’re pretty sure we’ll never think of champagne the same way again.
