She’s the girl of steel with a heart of gold. Welcome to MsMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 Supergirl TV moments.
For this list, we’re focusing on the best moments from the TV series starring our favorite female Kryptonian. Moments from the Supergirl comics, animated adaptations and other, “earlier” live action portrayals will not be considered, as that’s a list for another time. Now let’s fly up, up and away into our picks.
#10: Supergirl Saves a Plane
“Pilot”
Kara Danvers has spent her life hiding the fact that she’s an alien - that also has superpowers, and also happens to be Superman’s cousin. But when the plane her adopted sister Alex is flying on is sabotaged, Kara doesn’t hesitate to fly into action. The rescue is far from easy, with Kara even having to guide the plane over a bridge, but she succeeds in the feat of strength thanks to quick thinking and the willingness to do anything - even revealing a long kept secret - in order to save the people that she loves.
#9: Supergirl & Superman Save a Rocket Together
“The Adventures of Supergirl”
Supergirl seems to have a knack for saving giant things falling from the sky. When a spacecraft’s engines are sabotaged and it starts to plummet towards Earth, Supergirl and her cousin Superman fly off to save it. Although this is the first time that the two have ever worked together, it’s almost like second nature to them and it’s fun to watch them quickly bring the spaceship down into a cornfield. As they celebrate their successful rescue with excitement and glee, we see the strong bond the super-powered cousins share, which opens things to more family team-ups – as we see in the episode that follows!
#8: Supergirl Defeats Livewire
“Livewire”
After harshly criticizing Supergirl’s abilities and appearance, radio shock jock Leslie Willis is demoted to a helicopter traffic reporter by Cat Grant and has to fly through a dangerous thunderstorm. Supergirl tries to save Leslie but a lightning bolt travels through the Kryptonian’s body into the radio peronality’s, giving the shock jock lightning powers. [Get it?] After Leslie renames herself Livewire, she decides to get revenge on Cat and Supergirl. Fighting a foe with the power to command all electricity proves to be a huge challenge. But in another great moment, Supergirl refuses to back down and proves that her resourcefulness and strength will always win the day.
#7: Cat Grant Discovers Kara Is Supergirl
“Blood Bonds”
Don’t you hate it when your boss figures out your secret identity? Cat Grant discovers that her mild-mannered assistant Kara doubles as the heroic Supergirl about a 1/3 of the way through season 1. Although Kara tries to convince her boss that she’s wrong, Cat Grant remains convinced. In order to protect her true identity and keep her job, Kara’s shape-shifting friend J’onn Jones pretends to be Supergirl while she remains the ordinary Kara. The idea of this impersonation is clever, witty and light-hearted. But it also gives us the opportunity to see that Kara’s human life is just as important as her heroic pursuits.
#6: Supergirl Saves Mind-Controlled Friends
“Myriad”
When the villainous Non uses the mind control program Myriad to take over an entire city, Supergirl tries desperately to free everyone from his grasp. But Non confronts her and forces two of her close friends, James and Winn, along with a third employee, to jump off a building to their deaths. Supergirl manages to save James and Winn, but is too late to save the Kelly. It’s a crushing moment for Supergirl and a shocking one for the viewers. But despite the pain, Supergirl’s still got enough heart and resolve to keep fighting for her city.
#5: Supergirl Leaves Her Perfect Life
“For the Girl Who Has Everything”
By the time Supergirl arrived on Earth, she had seen her home planet of Krypton explode and had to cope with the loss of her family. So when an alien parasite leaves her trapped in an illusion where her family and home are still intact, it becomes nearly impossible for her to leave. But with some emotional words from her adopted sister Alex, Supergirl decides to leave the hallucination. This leads to a heart-wrenching moment that has Supergirl saying goodbye to the family she lost. Luckily for her and our heartstrings, she’s welcomed back by the family she gained on earth.
#4: Supergirl Stops a Robbery Without Her Powers
“Human for a Day”
After a fierce battle against the android Red Tornado, Supergirl finds herself drained and unable to use any of her powers. While she’s still recovering, an earthquake hits the city and causes the normally impervious heroine to break an arm. Despite all of that, Supergirl still refuses to sit by when she sees a robber going into a store and goes in to confront him. The moment was tense as she walked straight for his gun, more vulnerable than ever. Through a powerful and passionate speech, she convinces the robber to hand over his gun and leave the store in peace. Of all Supergirl’s abilities, she shows here that one of her strongest powers is her courage.
#3: Kara Gets Ice Cream from Barry
“Worlds Finest”
The Flash definitely knows how to sweep a girl off her feet. When Barry Allen, aka The Flash accidentally leaves his universe and ends up in Supergirl’s dimension, everyone is understandably a bit confused. So Barry draws a diagram for Kara, and her two best friends, James and Winn, to explain that he can run fast enough to cross the barrier between their worlds. After James asks how that’s possible, Barry runs and gets them all ice cream in the blink of an eye. The looks on everyone’s faces make this moment memorable by itself, but the hint of chemistry between Kara and Barry make this exchange impossible to forget.
#2: Kara Is Affected by Red Kryptonite
“Falling”
Even the best of us can have a bad day. Supergirl comes into contact with red kryptonite and slowly starts to become more violent and aggressive. At one point, she even throws her boss, Cat Grant, off of a balcony just to prove a point! Supergirl gets so out of control that it takes the combined power of the law enforcement, her sister and the reveal of the Martian Manhunter to cure her of the effects of red kryptonite. Seeing the normally kind and gentle Supergirl turn evil was a suspenseful and tragic turn of events that made us want to look away, but we couldn’t miss a second.
Before we soar over to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
Supergirl Visits the Fortress of Solitude
“Solitude”
Supergirl Saves the President
“Welcome to Earth”
Supergirl Confronts Her Mother’s Hologram
“Hostile Takeover”
#1: Supergirl’s Speech Frees the People from Mind Control
“Better Angels”
In the season 1 finale, Supergirl struggles to free the citizens of National City from the villain's mind control device. After being forced to fight her own sister, Supergirl realizes that a message of hope is enough to free a person’s mind. Together with her remaining allies, Supergirl gives an improvised speech that is broadcast across the city. The stirring monologue is full of emotion, heart and inspiration. She displays all her best qualities: her courage, her resilience and her ability to hope in the darkest times. In just one speech, Supergirl proves that she isn’t a heroine just because of what she can do, but because of who she is.
