Top 10 TLC Songs
They didn't chase Waterfalls and they Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg! Welcome to MsMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 TLC songs.
For this list, we’ve chosen our entries based on a combination of the artist’s fan favorites and their most commercially successful songs.
#10: “Damaged”
“Damaged” is arguably one of TLC’s most mature songs and was a wonderful way to showcase their new thematic direction in the new millennium. The single discusses the hurt caused from previous relationships as well as the transition of entering into a new relationship "damaged." At its heart, the song is about growing past the mistakes of the past and moving on. The last single by the band, the song features the girls at their most soulful, while also at their most mellow.
#9: “Diggin’ On You”
The last single from the group’s critically acclaimed CrazySexyCool album, “Diggin’ On You” is a slow jam powered by some seriously sweet hip hop beats. The song describes falling for a smooth talking person, despite being skeptical. The song’s smooth R&B nature is immediately relaxing and seductive, while the chorus makes it easily addicting! TLC turned what could have been an average R&B track into a seriously catchy classic!
#8: “What About Your Friends”
“What About Your Friends”, the third single from their debut album, emphasizes the importance of friendship and figuring out who really matters. With TLC’s quick rise to fame, they declare they won’t change because of money and will be true to themselves as well as those that they care about. With a simple yet extremely catchy chorus, this single was a chart topping success, becoming the group’s third consecutive appearance in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
#7: “Baby-Baby-Baby”
“Baby-Baby-Baby” was TLC’s second single and was an immediate radio hit! Unlike other singles from their first album, ] this song slowed their roll and was noticeably missing a rap from member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. The song is about being properly courted before sex and the girls adamantly declare that they want a man who can work for it and not just “flake it up.” Also, if you are looking for some good 90’s entertainment than look no further than the song’s music video, which features the group in a university dormitory.
#6: “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg”
TLC’s first single and music video bluntly declares the girls “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” for sex and quickly became a popular dance song. While the song laid the foundations for their unique musical style, it was not as story-driven as later releases. Sampling a song by Average White Band, the song was recognized by critics and even received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song in 1993. Not too bad for a debut single!
#5: “Red Light Special”
“Red Light Special” was TLC’s most sexually open single and the lyrics are very direct about what they want for sexual satisfaction. The music video was an inversion of contemporary rap and R&B videos and depicted Left Eye as a pimp in a male brothel. The music video was so racy, three different versions were cut, with each subsequent release being more and more explicit. With “Red Light Special”, TLC had another hit on their hands.
#4: “Unpretty”
The second single from their album FanMail, “Unpretty” treaded into new territory for TLC by dealing with society's pressures to maintain an image of beauty. The song’s music video unashamedly dealt with a variety of problems associated with body image issues, including bulimia. Equipped with a powerful message as well as a catchy beat, this song received critical acclaim and even greater commercial success, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
#3: “Creep”
A highly successful radio debut for the band was yet another award-winning TLC single. “Creep” is about a woman convinced her boyfriend is cheating, decides to not do anything about it, and cheat right back on him. The song won the group a Grammy award for the Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1996 ceremony after being nominated for two awards. “Creep” is TLC at one of their best moments and the memorable background trumpet played throughout only amplifies their irresistibly catchy lyrics.
#2: “No Scrubs”
After their 1994 CrazySexyCool album TLC experienced a near five-year hiatus, largely due to the group’s bankruptcy as well as some internal conflicts between the group and their producer at the time. When TLC finally returned, their single “No Scrubs” was an instantaneous hit and re-launched their careers. The song warns girls not to settle for just any guy as well as not to be afraid to just say no. “No Scrubs” earned TLC prestigious music awards and helped them close out the ‘90s in style.
