Every year has its stand out titles, and this year was packed with excellence. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be recapping the best videogame releases of 2010.
Number 10: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (Xbox 360, PS3)
The Castlevania franchise has long failed to produce a worthy 3D adventure, and boy did this reboot deliver the goods. Focusing on a cult’s goal of bringing about the ‘end of days’, gamers inhabited the role of Gabriel Belmont. Combat cross in hand, gamers weren’t just given spectacular action and platforming, but memorable storytelling as well.
Number 9: Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
Delivering a clever narrative with an incredible atmosphere and soundtrack, this is one of the best and most memorable horror outings that we have ever experienced in a video game. Not just stunning, it’s an expertly scripted adventure and a top-tier technical showcase for Xbox 360 hardware.
Number 8: Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360, PS3)
John Marston is a former outlaw that is being blackmailed by the government, who is keeping his wife and son hostage. To free them, he has to hunt down his former gang members. This must-play game takes freestyle sandbox story-telling to the next level with its impressive world, fast-paced gunplay and fantastic multiplayer.
Number 7: StarCraft II Wings of Liberty (PC)
Real-time strategy games don’t get much better than this! Sure, fans had to wait over a decade for this sequel to arrive, but they were not disappointed. Actually, we expect this game to keep them away from direct sunlight for years to come.
Number 6: BioShock 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Who knew that the underwater city of Rapture could still thrill us? Not just a rehash, this game improved upon every aspect of the original and turned you into a Big Daddy. Now that’s just wicked!
Number 5: God of War 3 (PS3)
In this final chapter of the original trilogy, Kratos and the Titans storm Mount Olympus in an attempt to kill Zeus and the rest of the Gods. The result is an epic quest that’s spectacular on every level.
Number 4: Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Few RPG’s can match the level of refinement found in Mass Effect 2. It’s simply an amazing narrative from start to finish, regardless of the decisions you choose to make. And no other series has such memorable characters that you genuinely are made to care about, all while placing them in a believable universe.
Number 3: Halo Reach (Xbox 360)
This magnificent prequel story not only filled in the gaps in the Halo storyline, but gave us some of the best online multiplayer available today. As Bungie’s final entry in the series, it truly was a love letter to their diehard fans.
Number 2: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Mario has already set the standard for platforming, and now he’s redefined it yet again. With a clear focus on creativity, Galaxy 2 improves on every aspect of the original. It also showcases masterful game design while culminating everything that’s best about the series.
Number 1: Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC)
The top selling game of the year is also the most engrossing and exciting experience of 2010. Everything you loved from earlier installments is back and better than ever. Speaking of which, nothing is as exciting or funny as fighting off Nazi Zombies as John F. Kennedy.
Honorable Mentions:
This year was so packed with top-notch titles, that we just have to pay our respects to the games that just missed the cut. These include Mafia 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Heavy Rain, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Assassins Creed Brotherhood. All are fantastic, and none should be passed over.
