Top 20 Crazy Mods in GTA

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 20 Crazy Mods in GTA.

For this list, we’ll be looking at any game in the series that has mods that change gameplay mechanics or visuals.

Let us know in the comment section below which mod you’ll be downloading right away.

#20: First-Person

“Grand Theft Auto IV” (2008)

More often than not, you either prefer third-person action games for the cinematic experience or first-person action games for the immersion. With the remaster of “GTA V” for current-gen consoles and the PC release, gamers got what they wanted with a first-person mode. Unfortunately, “GTA IV” didn’t get the same treatment, but that’s where this mod comes in. Want to see the world through Niko’s eyes as you gun down enemies and blow up cars? You can do that to your heart’s content. Visiting Liberty City in first-person immerses you into the experience, giving everything a grander scale.

#19: Better Deformation + More Durable Cars

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Ever wanted to see “Burnout” level of destruction on your cars? Well, you’ll probably have to just play “Burnout,” but if you want to see something as close as possible to that, then this is the mod for you. It was always a bit weird seeing your car with a couple of small dents and scratches on it after colliding head-first with a semi. This mod adds a degree of realism to collisions, making them look as if they actually crashed. Bumpers fall off, cars crumple, tires pop out, and vehicles generally just take a different shape.

#18: GTA Underground

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004)

The amount of work gone into this mod is phenomenal. It expands the level of content to the base of San Andreas by not just one map, but many. The aim is to combine the maps of “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” and aspects from Rockstar’s other titles into one game. Walking around Vice City as CJ in San Andreas will always boggle the mind and make you appreciate the scale of this mod. Now, you can experience the best of Rockstar’s titles in one game.

#17: Grand Theft Space

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

We wouldn’t blame you if you saw someone playing this mod and thinking it was a space sim and not actually within “GTA.” The mod allows you to explore the reaches of space, piloting a rocket and visiting other planets. Seeing the earth rotating from space is awe-inspiring, let alone walking on an entirely different world. You can even battle aliens, living out your favorite sci-fi movies. If you’ve always wanted to be an astronaut, but succumbed to the addictive nature of video games, then this is the mod for you.

#16: V Graphics

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004)

Often hailed as the best “Grand Theft Auto” out of the bunch due to its content-filled world, engaging story, and gameplay, the game does look dated, given that it’s over fifteen years old. If you feel like playing it again but just can’t get past its visual fidelity, this mod aims to remedy that. Reminiscent of “GTA V’s” graphics, this new coat of paint will make the game feel like brand new, allowing you to dive right in and experience the masterpiece with better-looking textures, models, and lighting. Here we go again.

#15: LSPD First Response

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

While we never intend to plow through a dozen civilians, blow up twenty cars, and lead the police on a wild goose chase throughout the city, sometimes it just can’t be helped in “GTA.” We need to face the consequences or make a career change. LSPD First Response allows you to experience Los Santos from the other side, as a law enforcer. Respond to calls, question perps, go on patrol, and arrest suspects; this mod is more than a simple police re-skin. It’s not all car chases and shootouts, though. The job does come with some strangeness as to be expected.

#14: Vice Cry: Remastered

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Similar to “GTAV” graphics, this mod allows you to experience a classic with a new coat of paint, but this time it’s Vice City in “V’s” engine. While we admit, nothing can beat the nostalgia we feel when we look at and play the original “Vice City,” this mod allows you to experience the city with modern graphics and gameplay. We hope that one day the mod features playable missions, as hinted at in the trailer. For now, however, we can fly as high as we can and parachute over the city during sunset for full nostalgia.

#13: GTA Alien City

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004)

If you’re not Russian, you might want to learn the language. Set on Anderius, the mod changes most assets to make it seem like you’re not in San Andreas anymore, and it definitely looks that way. While the mod does take inspiration from other IPs, it all works to sell the experience. Thanks to the map markers, you should still be able to play through the entire game without understanding what you’re doing, and to be honest, most of the fun that’s had is exploring this strange and alien world.

#12: Simple Zombies

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Don’t let the title of this mod fool you. This mod is more than just a pedestrian re-skin. It converts your entire experience into that of survival horror. Stats like stamina, thirst, and hunger have to be managed while you defend yourself from the walking dead. You can recruit NPC’s and enter hostile zones where you have to battle hostile NPC’s who are just out to look after themselves. You can even craft items to create a home and defensible base. The options allow you to change quite a few things so that you can live out your favorite type of zombie movie.

#11: Euphoria Ragdoll Overhaul

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

We all love “GTA V,” but we have to admit that “GTA IV” just did a lot of things better, which was noticeable with the euphoria physics engine’s implementation. This mod adds those enhancements to the core “GTA 5” experience. Enemies die more realistically. They react to being hit by projectiles more or colliding with anything, really, and everything just looks and feels more cinematic. While many other mods take away from the realism, this adds to it, so it’s highly recommended if you want a minor change with a significant impact.

#10: Imperial Star Destroyer

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Ever wondered what it would be like to have the Imperial Empire show their dominance over your city? Well, this mod which works as a replacement for the Blimps, allows you to showcase the iconic film Cruisers in high altitude above Los Santos, and boy are they a sight to behold. While they currently lack laser fire abilities … for now, You can take them for a spin all over the map. If you’re still hungry for sci-fi, there’s another mod that’ll allow you to spawn the Reaper Dreadnauts from the Mass Effect series.

#9: Firefighter

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Harkening back to features of previous GTA games where you could take control of some emergency services, this mod allows you to tackle a raging inferno or heroically resuscitate a damsel in distress. For once, the fire truck is put to a better use than just hosing down unsuspecting pedestrians, as it is your most valuable tool in saving innocent lives. It is rare to be on the right side of the law in any GTA title but this mod gives you the opportunity to do some good in the community.

#8: Mayhem Mod

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Cars are being flung left right and centre in this mod that leaves a mighty fine trail of destruction in your wake. Essentially, this mod makes it look like an invisible hand is swiping cars off the road or flinging God mode or invincibility is a must have as if a bus is suddenly attracted to you, you’re guaranteed to be picking up a lot of damage. Using relatively simple push and pull mechanics, this mod creates a sure fire way to pick up five stars wanted level in as short a time as possible.

#7: Meteor Shower

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

If anywhere is in need of a cleansing from god, then it is the sordid city of Los Santos that will be top of the list. Meteors will rain down from the sky to destroy anything they land on. The flaming pieces of rock are impressively animated to give a real sense of the apocalypse as helpless citizens frantically scream and run for their lives. You’ll barely be able to move for more than a few seconds before being struck down but it’s still so much fun.

#6: Graphics Mod 2013

“Grand Theft Auto IV” (2008)

The living and breathing world of Liberty City is already pretty spectacular without any enhancement but this addition takes it to another level. The world feels far more realistic and immersive, much like something using EA’s Frostbyte engine, to add an extra layer to the home of Niko Bellic. Liberty City is already a pretty good reconstruction of New York City and this mod definitely takes you one step closer to the real Big Apple. Similar to the ENB mod for the game, it adds a new dimension that previously couldn’t be appreciated.

#5: Tsunami

“Grand Theft Auto” (2013)

Ever wondered what Los Santos would look like in the aftermath of a huge tsunami? Imagine no more as every inch of the map is covered in water apart from the tops of the very largest buildings in the city. The top of one of these buildings provides the best viewpoint to take in the carnage caused by the mammoth waves. After that, dive in to take a close up look to see what’s been left behind on the brand new sea floor.

#4: Pedestrian Riot

“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Ever wondered what it’d be like if every NPC in the game acted like you? Well now you can, although this mod ends up being less of a riot and more of an all-out war on the streets of Los Santos. All pedestrians are kitted out with some sort of weapon and are more than happy to use it to take out the player and fellow citizens. You can give the angry pedestrians a wide berth if you just want to watch the carnage un-fold but with no cops about, you can go on a spree without fear of retribution.

#3: Back to the Future

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004) to “Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

One of the most iconic vehicles from cinema is expertly brought to life in the GTA titles. Not only is the Delorean faithfully recreated but many of the famous sound effects from the film series are included to add to the authenticity. When you reach 88mph you will disappear in the classic lines of flame and then burst back into the scene in a flash of light, having the game cycle from day to night and vice versa, which will really make you feel like you’re an actual time traveller!

#2: Iron Man

“Grand Theft Auto IV” (2008) and “Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)

Comic book mods are common fare for Let’s Players and it won’t be a surprise to see the Hulk or Ghost Rider stepping foot in Liberty City or Los Santos. It is Tony Stark’s alter ego that is the most fun to take control of however. As well as having a cool model adjustment, you can fly, hover and shoot beams from your hands, just like in the comics. To really put you in Iron Man’s helmet, be sure to activate the HUD and turn on Jarvis, although we don’t see him approving of the mayhem you’re sure to cause.

#1: Online Multiplayer

“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004)

Even before GTA V’s online mode became a multiplayer phenomenon, there were already thousands of players blowing each other up on the internet in Los Santos. The commitment from modders to create this world is absolutely astonishing. There is the usual free roam mode but players can also take part in races, death matches and dozens more customs game modes. As well as being a technical feat, it is a brilliant bit of nostalgia that you and any number of friends can enjoy.
