We’re including films that were originally scheduled to be released in 2020 but were pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That said, some release dates are subject to change. So, don’t be surprised if a few of these resurface on our most anticipated movies of 2022 list.
What’s your most anticipated movie of 2021? Let us know in the comments.
#20: “Halloween Kills”
Release Date: October 15, 2021 [U.S.]It took 40 years, but Michael Myers and Laurie Strode finally got a worthy successor to the 1978 slasher classic. On one hand, we would’ve been fine if 2018’s “Halloween” marked the conclusion of this long-running horror franchise. Given how well-executed the last film was, however, we’re eager to see what director David Gordon Green will bring to this next chapter. “Halloween Kills” is being shot back-to-back with another sequel, “Halloween Ends.” If that title is any indication, Michael’s days may be numbered. Things will likely get worse before they get better for Laurie and her family, though. So, we can expect “Halloween Kills” to have an especially high body count.
#19: “Mortal Kombat”
Release Date: TBAAlthough 1995’s “Mortal Kombat” is considered by some to be one of the better video game movies, that isn’t really saying much. At least we can all agree that it’s a masterpiece compared to its sequel “Annihilation,” which was so bad that a third film was scrapped. This reboot aims to inject new blood into the franchise, with Simon McQuoid making his feature directorial debut. There are a few familiar creatives behind-the-scenes like James Wan as a producer. Co-screenwriter Greg Russo assured fans on Twitter that the film will be rated R with fatalities. Originally scheduled for January 15, 2021, it’s since been pushed back due to the pandemic; but we still have our fingers crossed for a 2021 release.
#18: “The King’s Man”
Release Date: February 12, 2021 [U.S.]Remember back in July 2019 when we saw the first teaser for this “Kingsman” prequel? Few films have had their release dates shifted around more than “The King’s Man.” The numerous delays have only heightened our anticipation, though. The film brings together a cast that seems perfectly tailored for this franchise, including Ralph Fiennes, Rhys Ifans, and Djimon Hounsou. Eggsy and Harry might not be the focus, but “The King’s Man” isn’t straying too far from its roots with Matthew Vaughn once again directing. We can thus expect the same inventive, bombastic action, but with a wartime twist. Just as the first “Kingsman” put a fresh spin on the spy genre, here’s hoping this film takes the series to bold new territory.
#17: “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”
Release Date: June 25, 2021 [U.S.]“Venom” was among the more divisive modern superhero movies. While critics mostly panned it, the film became an audience favorite thanks to Tom Hardy’s committed performance and some welcome humor. If the first movie’s mid-credits scene didn’t spell it out already, the sequel’s title makes it clear that there’s going to be plenty of Carnage. And yes, Woody Harrelson will reprise his role as the villain, albeit with a much-needed haircut. The film also sees the return of Michelle Williams, who will hopefully have more time to shine as She-Venom. Sitting in the director’s chair this time is Andy Serkis, whose experience with “The Lord of the Rings” and “Planet of the Apes” should make him well-suited for an effects-heavy feature such as this.
#16: “Space Jam: A New Legacy”
Release Date: July 16, 2021 [U.S.]“Space Jam” remains a definitive 90s kids movie. Who better to bring this nostalgic classic into the 21st century than LeBron James? While the Looney Tunes will of course be in play as well, we could see an even wider roster of familiar faces. According to a leaked synopsis, James and Bugs Bunny will travel “through a never-before-imagined world filled with iconic movie scenes and characters as they reassemble the Looney Tunes to rescue his lost son.” Rumors suggest that Pennywise, the Joker, and Jim Carrey as the Mask might make cameos. That said, time will tell how legit these claims are. If the rumors do pan out, however, we can expect Warner Bros.’s biggest assembly of characters since “Ready Player One.”
#15: “West Side Story”
Release Date: December 10, 2021 [U.S.]Almost sixty years after the Best Picture winning film hit theaters, Steven Spielberg’s take on the iconic musical is entering the awards season rumble. Spielberg stated back in 2011 that he’d “love to do an old-fashioned musical,” and he would “someday.” It’s taken about a decade, but Spielberg is at last fulfilling his dream. “West Side Story” will feature a few established performers, including Ansel Elgort as Tony, and Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the original. Spielberg’s adaptation will largely consist of up-and-comers, though, with David Alvarez as Bernardo, Ariana DeBose as Anita, and Rachel Zegler as Maria. Of course, the choreography is arguably the most important element of “West Side Story”. Fortunately, this production landed Tony Winner Justin Peck.
#14: Untitled “Spider-Man: Far From Home” Sequel
Release Date: December 17, 2021 [U.S.]Since Marvel’s 2021 slate is pretty full and this film is currently scheduled for December, we wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Holland’s next outing as Spider-Man gets bumped until 2022. Given the bombshell that “Far From Home” left us on, though, there was no way that we could leave this third chapter off our list. Honestly, we’re just relieved that the film is happening with Marvel Studios and Sony cooperating after that whole debacle in August 2019. This follow-up will not only see the return of Holland, but also Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange. It’s also been reported that Jamie Foxx will reprise his “Amazing Spider-Man 2” role as Electro. His appearance could signal the start of a live-action Spider-Verse.
#13: “Top Gun: Maverick”
Release Date: July 2, 2021 [U.S.]In the first “Top Gun” film, a combination of impressive flying scenes and a cast of fun characters gave audiences everywhere a need for speed. After over three decades of waiting, the upcoming sequel seems poised to bring even more thrills. Tom Cruise will return as a hotshot pilot in “Top Gun: Maverick.” He'll have to put aside his ego to train a batch of new recruits. The trailer promises some absolutely gorgeous and exciting flying scenes. And between the beach scene and Miles Teller playing the son of beloved character Goose, there’s plenty of callbacks for longtime fans. We can't wait to see this movie take off.
#12: “Candyman”
Release Date: August 27, 2021 [U.S.]We’ve said it once, now say it with us four more times: Candyman, Candyman, Candyman… ugg, no we’re too afraid! Can you blame us? The 1992 film is a horror classic that arguably holds up even better today. We can definitely see why the source material appealed to Jordan Peele, who serves as a producer and co-writer on the spiritual sequel. The movie reunites Peele with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, whose other credits include “Watchmen,” “Aquaman,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Nia DaCosta, who previously brought us the indie thriller “Little Woods,” is getting her big break as the movie’s director. Best of all, the filmmakers are bringing back Tony Todd himself to once again play Candyman... Oh no, we said his name five times!
#11: “A Quiet Place Part II”
Release Date: April 23, 2021 [U.S.]It’s equally ironic and eerie that “A Quiet Place Part II” was originally slated to come out the same month that the pandemic hit. Much like the Abbot family, we were all going about our usual business when the world changed forever. Even more surreal, “A Quiet Place” was set in the year 2020! At its core, “Part II” is a sequel that picks up immediately after the first film. It’s also a prequel with flashbacks providing insight into day one of the invasion. That means John Krasinski will be both behind and in front of the camera again, although the spotlight is on the rest of the family. When audiences finally get to see this film, expect it to make plenty of noise.
#10: “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”
Release Date: June 11, 2021 [U.S.]While fans may think of “Ghostbusters” as a comedy film, the upcoming entry in the franchise looks like an action-packed supernatural spectacle. The trailer follows two children who move into a peaceful looking town in the country. After they arrive, their new hometown is rattled with earthquakes and mysterious green lights. These events will eventually motivate the kids to jump into the Ectomobile and start shooting proton lasers at poltergeists. The movie features an all-star ensemble that includes Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd. It will also feature several surviving cast members of the original classic. Between the thrilling concept and stellar cast, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” might be able to revive the franchise’s hopes for the future.
#9: “The Matrix 4”
Release Date: December 22, 2021 [U.S.]The original “Matrix” had a huge impact on the action genre. We've lost track of how many movies have tried to pay homage to the bullet time scene alone! Hopefully, “Matrix 4” will kickstart another action revolution. While we don't know too much about the plot at this point, the film's casting gives us plenty to be excited about. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and others will be returning to reprise their famous roles. And we're also going to see talented actors like Jessica Henwick and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II join the franchise. Audiences will not want to miss their chance to enter the Matrix again.
#8: “Mission: Impossible 7”
Release Date: November 19, 2021 [U.S.]Every installment in this thrilling spy franchise has featured a jaw-dropping action sequence. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” alone featured a high-altitude jump, a helicopter chase, and a fight on top of a mountain. The behind-the-scenes footage of a crazy motorcycle stunt is more than enough to get us excited for “Mission Impossible 7.” We also know that fantastic actors like Hayley Atwell and Shea Whigham will appear in new roles. And since the movie will reportedly set up a two-part story, there's gonna be plenty of plot packed in between all the action. Whether you're a fan of crazy stunts or layered spy thrillers, you should choose to accept the next “Mission: Impossible” film.
#7: “F9”
Release Date: May 28, 2021 [U.S.]“F9” can’t get here fast enough. Wrestling superstar John Cena is joining the franchise alongside musician Cardi B. The film will also be a “Tokyo Drift” reunion of sorts with the return of Lucas Black, Bow Wow, Jason Tobin, and Sung Kang as fan-favorite Han. They'll all collide in a plot that pits Cena's Jakob against Vin Diesel's Dom. Their conflict will involve crazy fight scenes, fast cars, and physics-defying action. And if Michelle Rodriguez was telling the truth, they might even go to space. “F9” has the potential to be one of the best movies in the franchise. If you're not caught up, now's a great time to do a marathon and join the “Fast & Furious” family.
#6: “No Time to Die”
Release Date: April 2, 2021 [U.S.]Bond’s 25th outing will be unlike any other film that’s come before. Lashana Lynch will become the first black woman to take up the code name 007. She’ll kick ass alongside Ana De Armas as Paloma, and of course, Daniel Craig as James Bond. “No Time to Die” will also feature two Oscar winners as villains: Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld and Rami Malek’s Safin. Outside of the blinding amount of star power, the trailers have hinted at creative and pulse-pounding action sequences. Bond will jump off of bridges and narrowly avoid/shoot cars while trying to save the world. We’ll see if he’ll prevail when the epic and historic “No Time to Die” is released.
#5: “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”
Release Date: July 9, 2021 [U.S.]Phase 4 of the MCU is on the way. Although we’ll be seeing plenty of established characters in the years ahead, several new heroes are also getting their day in the sun. The “Eternals” is poised to be an epic ensemble piece. But “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” has us even more psyched for a few reasons. For starters, Simu Liu is taking center stage as the first Asian actor to lead an MCU film. There’s diversity behind the camera as well, as we’ll see Destin Daniel Cretton make the leap from indie darlings like “Short Term 12” to major blockbusters. Above all else, it has the potential to make up for that Mandarin twist from “Iron Man 3.”
#4: “Black Widow”
Release Date: May 7, 2021 [U.S.]“Black Widow” will be the first feature-length installment in the MCU’s fourth phase. More importantly, it’ll be Natasha Romanoff’s first solo outing, something we’ve waited over ten years to see. The question remains if this will be a swan song for Natasha or if the film will find a way to bring her back after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Either way, Scarlett Johansson isn’t the only reason to be excited for “Black Widow.” She leads an all-star cast that includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz. In a story that takes place after “Captain America: Civil War” but before “Infinity War,” Black Widow finds herself wrapped up in a web of conspiracies, espionage, and unfinished business.
#3: “The Suicide Squad”
Release Date: August 6, 2021 [U.S.]There’s plenty of excitement in the air for the #Snydercut of “Justice League.” But James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” can give that heroic team a run for their money. The new DC film will follow a variety of villains with crazy abilities going on an insane mission. The squad will include Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. We’ll all get John Cena as Peacemaker, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, and so many more. Gunn proved that he can bring humor, drama, and balance to a big ensemble cast in both “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. His talents and the huge cast seem to be adding up to one fantastic action movie.
#2: “Dune”
Release Date: October 1, 2021 [U.S.]Book-to-movie adaptations don’t always turn out well. But the upcoming “Dune” might break the cycle. Right off the bat, the trailer showed off some sleek fight scenes between its cast members. Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, and way too many other talented people to name here will all take part in the action. And although the original novel has plenty of material to adapt, director Denis Villeneuve and the creative team will only cover half of the book in this film. This genius move should make the complex story much easier to digest. Whether you’re a hardcore fan or a newcomer who just wants to see that giant space worm, “Dune” is a must-see.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
“Uncharted”
Release Date: July 16, 2021 [U.S.]
“Morbius”
Release Date: March 19, 2021 [U.S.]
“In the Heights”
Release Date: June 18, 2021 [U.S.]
“Raya and the Last Dragon”
Release Date: March 12, 2021 [U.S.]
“Spiral”
Release Date: May 21, 2021 [U.S.]
#1: “Godzilla vs. Kong”
Release Date: May 21, 2021 [U.S.]Are you ready for some giant monster mayhem? In the red corner, we have the giant primate from “Kong: Skull Island.” This massive mammal is both ridiculously strong and intelligent enough to use improvised weapons to take down other monsters. In the blue corner, we have Godzilla, who’s ready to defend his title as King of the Monsters. This giant lizard can unleash atomic blasts from its mouth, take on other Titans, and gain more power when he absorbs nuclear energy. These two ridiculously famous monster icons haven’t clashed since 1962. We can’t wait to see Godzilla and Kong back together, whether they fight, team-up, or get shawarma together.
