Has Rick always shot like a stormtrooper? Welcome to Watch The Walking Dead, the weekly show where we look at the most fun and interesting moments, references and easter-eggs in the newest episode of AMC's The Walking Dead. Today we're looking at Season 8 Episode 1, "Mercy".
#3 Episode 1 Callbacks
"Mercy" doubled as the season 8 premiere as well as The Walking Dead's 100th episode. To celebrate this huge milestone, the episode had a lot of throwbacks to the very first episode "Days Gone By". We're sure we didn't catch them all, but our personal favorite was Carl walking through the group of abandoned cars. This scene heavily mirrors the iconic scene where Rick Grimes is slowly familiarizing himself with the apocalyptic world, right down to the cool shot with Rick and Carl taking taking their hat off to look under a car. What throwbacks did you pick up on?
#2 Rick Can't Do Maths
Rick's opening speech "Only One Person Has to Die" ties directly into the episode's title "Mercy", drawing a clear line between Rick's Survivors and Negan's Saviors. To show us that he is above his rival, Rick emphasizes to everyone that only one person has to die and even offers Negan's people a chance to surrender. Unfortunately, the sentiment is broken as soon as you connect the episode's timelines together and realize that immediately after the "we only need to kill Negan" speech Rick's crew immediately proceed to kill this guy, and that guy, and that guy, AND that guy, annnnnd those guys. Is that It? Oh and all them.
Before we get to our top moment, here are some of the best lines from this week’s episode:
"It is."
"My brother... for she today my sister."
"It always starts with one person."
#1 Carl's New Friend
The aforementioned abandoned car scene introduces us to what will most likely be a new cast member. While we don't know who exactly this eccentric lone survivor is, our money is on Siddiq, one of several characters from the comic book who have yet to make an appearance in the TV series. As we know a lot of you would rather not skip ahead, we won't spoil much about Siddiq here, other than to say that the comic book version of the character isn't supposed to be introduced until after the war against the Saviors. To that point however, neither is the Oceanside settlement so clearly the show doesn't mind mixing up the timeline. Whatever the case, we'll probably have to wait until next week, or, knowing this show, a few episodes down the line to find out.
