If you're going to dance to Nicki, you better do it with finesse. Welcome to MsMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 5 Choreographed Dances to Nicki Minaj's “Chun-Li”.
We're looking at the choreographers that went sky high to give their own style to Minaj's track “Chun-Li.” We're basing our picks on a mix of stellar moves, camera work and how each group used their space to make their dance better.
#5: Phil Wright, Danceplex
Phil Wright's take on “Chun Li” is as heartwarming as it is impressive. Each dancer gets a little time to freestyle, while the very diverse group maintains an insane amount of synchronization at all times. Every hand move is exaggerated to match the swagga-heavy energy of the track. The crews go lightning fast every chorus, and even the kids find their inner badass. The director keeps the camera bouncing around the singers to keep the visuals from growing stale. Despite the complex choreography, the Danceplex crew's sense of fun is so contagious that every dancer is smiling.
#4: Hamilton Evans, Millennium Dance Complex
For Hamilton Evans' routine, dancers rapidly switch between tempos and moves. Though they hit the beats of the song accurately, they also interpret the lyrics with comedy and attitude. While the video is different groups interpreting the same set of moves, the editing highlights each dancer's spin on the routine. There's also a surprising amount of improv going on simultaneously without groups losing their synergy. This focus on essentials is probably why so many celebrities learn their moves at the Millennium Dance Complex. His focus on the subtle details in the music sets his performance apart.
#3: Hyojin X Gosh, 1Million Dance Studio
Unlike many dance groups, Hyojin X Gosh make sure to lip-sync as they work their routines. And the troupe delivers frantic choreography with groovy chemistry that many larger groups lack. Dancers wave their arms hypnotically and even crawl across the floor to the music. The camera homes in on the key action, while accentuating how well the crews know the lyrics. Hyojin X Gosh are one of the few groups to pay clever visual reference to Chun-Li's hair and poses. Their mix of traditional dances with urban hip hop styles complements Minaj's own writing.
#2: Aliya Janell, Queens N’ Lettos
It wouldn't be a Queens N’ Lettos dance if there wasn't insane choreography in heels, even for some of the guys. Aliya Janell and her dancers emphasize power moves like hair-whips, contortionist bending and even light voguing. The camera whips on hard zooms while also shaking with some of the group's heavy moves. The troupe also features kicks and a few fighting moves in honor Chun-Li's video game origins. Janell's choreography was so impressive that Minaj even dances with her in a preview video of the track. Along with the aggressive dance moves, each dancer plays to the camera to involve the audience as well.
#1: Matt Steffanina, Millennium Dance Complex
With a background in commercial dancing and teaching, Matt Steffanina's moves are flashy but rarely too hard to replicate. As his group yells in a circle to keep the energy going, dancers mix everything from slo-mo to interactive mime work. Each section brings a lot of variation to their choreography including additional spins between steps and even full-on robot versions of certain moves. Many of the highlights of the video, however, are all the improvised dances in the breakdown, where most other videos slow down or stop. Whether you want to dance along or see something unbelievable, Steffanina covers it all.
