Top 5 Reasons Sharpay Evans Isn’t the Villain of High School Musical

She’s the most diabolical Wildcat at East High School… or is she? Welcome to MsMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 5 Reasons Sharpay Evans Isn’t the Villain of High School Musical.

For this list, we’re taking a look at the “High School Musical” movies from an alternative perspective, observing how Sharpay is actually more of a victim than a villain.

#5: She Gets Troy a Summer Job

In the second movie, Troy begins to worry about paying for college. So Sharpay, being the evil, diabolical witch she is, gets him a summer job at her family’s country club. Wait, what? Yeah, this so-called villainess not only helps Troy earn money for his education, but also puts him on the fast track to a promotion by introducing him to some significant contacts. She even paves the way for all of Troy's buddies to get jobs at the club too. Granted, Sharpay has other motives, as she wants to get closer to Troy. When you look at the big picture, though, she does more to support Troy's future than many other characters.

#4: She Liked Theater Before It Was Cool

From the very beginning, Sharpay had a passion for the performing arts. Despite the fact that most of her peers thought theater was lame, Sharpay was happy pursuing her dreams. When the popular jock decides that he wants to be a singer, however, theater quickly becomes the coolest thing on campus. Although Sharpay loved musicals before everyone else, she gets no credit for setting this trend. If anything, she's still viewed as an outsider. The crowd may aimlessly follow Troy no matter what he does, but we should never forget that Sharpay was the original drama queen.

#3: Troy & Gabriella Have Other Priorities

Like we were saying, Sharpay's entire universe revolves around musical theater, which is something we can’t say for Troy and Gabriella. They not only show up to auditions late, but unprepared as well. Going to desperate lengths to secure her spot, Sharpay rearranges the schedule so callbacks take place at the exact same time as Troy's basketball championship and Gabriella's scholastic decathlon. They find a way to delay their other commitment and manage to perform, but it’s worth noting that they STILL arrive late. These two are clearly juggling too many balls while Sharpay always has her head in the game. Come hell or high water, she wouldn't miss a performance for anything else.

#2: Sharpay Has More Training Than Troy or Gabriella

Sharpay was literally born to be on stage. We wouldn't be surprised if she was singing before she was talking, and dancing before she was walking. Having spent her entire life preparing for the spotlight, there's no doubt that she's the most qualified person to play the lead in the school musical. As for Troy and Gabriella, their experience solely consists of singing together on the spot at karaoke night. They don't even take any singing lessons before auditioning. What’s the message there? That some people naturally have everything handed to them and people who work hard to achieve their dreams just need to accept it? In Sharpay’s shoes, most people would probably feel cheated.

#1: She Doesn’t Act Like a Diva in the End

Villains are often so motivated that they'll stop at nothing to get what they want, even if it ultimately destroys them. Does that really sound like Sharpay? After losing the lead in the musical, she congratulates Gabriella and tells her to break a leg. Her brother totally betrays her in the second film, but she still gives him the talent show award as a sign of love. Even when she fails to get the Juilliard scholarship in “Senior Year,” Sharpay refrains from throwing the tantrum one might expect. And yet, despite all of this, she's still categorized as a villain. As far as we're concerned, however, we'd gladly go on a fabulous adventure with her.
