#5: Shoulder Pads for Women
Padding women’s clothing to make their figure’s look more masculine is a vestige of the Power Dressing era, and it’s a trend that has been puzzling people for decades. Elsa Schiaparelli was the first major designer to include shoulder pads in women’s clothing in the 1930s. Their popularity has waxed and waned over the years, with the peak of popularity occurring in the 1980s. The fashion was embraced by women in the corporate world in an effort to imitate male styles. Thankfully, in the modern world, you don’t need literal broad shoulders to be taken seriously in the workplace.
#4: Extreme Sleeves
Sleeves should be pretty basic, right? You want them to cover your arms for chillier days and that’s about it. Seems pretty hard to get wrong. But when designers create sleeves that impede you from going about your everyday tasks, that’s when we’ve got a problem. Ultra long sleeves have come into fashionof late and it’s got us shaking our heads. We can’t figure out what’s supposed to be cool about sleeves that completely cover your hands, making it impossible for you to hold something. It may look good on the runway but this is a trend that shouldn’t have made it to the real world.
#3: One-Sleeved Shirts
We get it, sometimes fashion is just supposed to look cool and not necessarily have any practical application. According to fashion newsmakers, this trend is on the rise again after about a decade of lying dormant. While we understand the urge to show off those toned shoulders, why not reveal both instead of just one? We can’t help but find that these tops and dresses always end up making you look a bit unbalanced and lopsided. Pick a style; sleeveless, short sleeved or long sleeved and just stick with it.
#2: Shutter Shades
Here is the list of the basic things we want from our sunglasses: Number one- shade from the sun. Number two- the ability to see. Shutter shades often offer neither of these qualities. It’s fine to wear something that’s purely decorative, but when it hinders your vision, you probably want to move on to the next trend. Shutter shades have actually been around longer than you would think, first debuting in the 1950s. You’d think that since then, people would have wised up to the fact that these are completely and utterly useless, but hey, fashion and function don’t always go hand in hand.
#1: Fake Pockets
Things no one says: “I’m looking for pants that give off the lock of having pockets, but I don’t want any pesky real pockets getting in the way.” This phenomenon only seems to plague women’s pants and can be extremely frustrating for those who want a place to put their phone, a lipstick tube, or their hands if they’re feeling socially awkward. It’s these sorts of atrocities that force women to buy purses to hold all of the things that their pockets cannot. Are the purse makers in league with the pants makers? Probably. Not to sound like conspiracy theorists, but there’s just something so sinister about these faux pockets!
