Travel Guide: Norway

This Scandinavian country was once the home of the Vikings. Learn more about Norway.

The Kingdom of Norway

Officially known as the Kingdom of Norway, this country is found in Northern Europe. The Nordic country is also one of the nations that forms the Scandinavian Peninsula. With an area of almost 150 square miles, this is one of the larger countries in Europe. However, its population of 4.9 million makes it Europe’s second-least densely populated country.

Capital City: Oslo

Norway shares much of its border with neighboring Sweden, while also touching Finland and Russia. Its capital city is Oslo, and this is the country’s largest city, as well.

Landscape and Scenery

Norway is well-known for its beautiful landscape. In fact, some of the country’s most popular attractions are its vast and deep fjords. The countryside is a mountainous one that is punctuated by plateau sections in the central and southwestern regions. You will also encounter a number of glaciers throughout the area.

Climate

Considering Norway’s latitude, its climate is relatively mild especially on the west coast. For example in Oslo, the temperature ranges from 41°F in January, to 82°F in July.

Culture

Norway is both ultra modern and delightfully traditional in its culture. The country has successfully preserved a great deal of the old world culture due to its relative isolation from outside influence until the twentieth century. For example, you can witness the folk rituals in practice during celebrations on the country’s Constitution Day that take place each year on May 17th.

Religion

In terms of religion, almost ninety per cent of the country’s population belongs to the country’s Evangelical Lutheran national church, the Church of Norway.

Wildlife

This Scandinavian country is also a great site to view reindeer, whales, eagles and more beautiful wildlife, and this helps make Norway a fascinating place to visit.
