G.I. Joe, Micronauts And D&D: Paramount Announces Upcoming Films

Hasbro Strikes Again

It’s fair to say that fans and critics aren’t exactly loving the Transformers film series at the moment. Oh sure, the first was filled with nostalgia and had Optimus Prime trading blows with Megatron, what more could we want? However, after the shine wore off, it became clear that these flicks had no substance whatsoever, to the point where we couldn’t even enjoy the overblown action scenes anymore.

While the Autobots are still licking their wounds from the catastrophe that was The Last Knight, it turns out that Paramount Pictures still haven’t given up on their dream of a Hasbro Cinematic Universe, as they have announced three new films that are scheduled to be released in the near future. As it happens, they’re all straight out of our childhood. Oh dear.

According to an article on IGN

Paramount has set release dates for three of its biggest upcoming movies, including the next G.I. Joe film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third G. I. Joe movie will open in theaters on March 27, 2020. It’ll most likely be a reboot with a more millennial approach, as reported a few months ago.

Director D.J. Caruso revealed earlier this year he wanted to make G.I. Joe 3 a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover film. However, Paramount and Hasbro ultimately decided against bringing the two franchises together for various reasons, with the two companies reassessing the project.

The first Micronauts movie will be released seven months after G.I. Joe 3 on October 16, 2020. The toy property follows a race of microscopic alien warriors from an alternate dimension. No word yet on who’ll be directing the film.

Lastly, a movie based on the Dungeons & Dragons table top role-playing game will hit theaters July 23, 2021. Deathstroke actor Joe Manganiello revealed he had developed a Dungeons & Dragons script with John Cassel, and has been actively looking to get the project off the ground. Though it’s not known if Paramount’s film will be based on Manganiello’s screenplay.

A few years ago, Hasbro and Paramount announced plans to unite several franchises, including G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionaries, ROM and M.A.S.K. under a cinematic universe. An untitled Hasbro film will open on October 1, 2021. Whether or not this mystery project has anything to do with the Hasbro shared movie universe remains to be seen.

We’re not saying G.I Joe: Retaliation was anything to rave about, but a reboot starring a millennial as Snake Eyes? We’re not holding out much hope for that.

The new Dungeons & Dragons film on the other hand sounds a lot more promising, if only for Joe Manganiello’s involvement; he is an old school mega-fan after all. Let’s just hope we don’t have another Warcraft on our hands…
