The 90th Academy Awards are set to air on March 4, 2018. If you’re predicting Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water to clean up most of the awards, it’s probably a safe bet. That being said, the night could also offer several surprise wins that would be nothing short of historic.
While some of these are admittedly long shots given the competition, here are ten milestones that could be reached at the 2018 Oscars.
10. Roger Deakins Could Win His First Oscar
With The Shawshank Redemption, No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, and numerous others under his belt, this cinematographer has accumulated 14 Oscar nominations over the years, but has never been able to win. Could his stunning work on Blade Runner 2049 finally break Deakins’ losing streak? Having already won big at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards and the BAFTAs, this just might be his year.
9. Meryl Streep Could Tie With Katharine Hepburn’s Record
In a crowded category that includes Frances McDormand, Sally Hawkins, Margot Robbie, and Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep likely won’t win Best Actress for The Post. If she were to miraculously pick up her fourth Oscar, however, she’d tie Katharine Hepburn for the most acting wins ever.
8. Timothée Chalamet Could Become The Youngest Best Actor Winner Ever
Gary Oldman seems like a lock to win Best Actor for his uncanny portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. If anyone can beat Oldman, though, it’s newcomer Timothée Chalamet for Call Me by Your Name. At age 22, this would make Chalamet the youngest Best Actor winner ever, surpassing the previous record help by a 29-year-old Adrien Brody.
7. We Could See The Oldest Oscar Winners Ever
At age 82, Christopher Plummer became the oldest winner in any acting category for his supporting work in Beginners. Now 88, Plummer could shatter his own record for his performance in All the Money in the World. Meanwhile, 89-year-old James Ivory could become the oldest male winner ever if he takes home the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Call Me by Your Name. 89-year-old Agnès Varda would also be the oldest female winner if Faces Places wins Best Documentary.
6. Logan Could Become the First Superhero Movie To Win a Screenplay Award
We were all surprised and delighted when Logan made the cut in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. We’ve seen adaptations of graphic novels represented here before, i.e. A History of Violence and Ghost World. Logan stands out as the first superhero movie to break through, however, and Marvel fans would love nothing more than to see it take home the gold.
5. Dee Rees Could Become The First Black Woman To Win Best Adapted Screenplay
Dee Rees might’ve been snubbed from the Best Director lineup, but she did prevail in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. If she wins for co-writing Mudbound, it’ll be a major moment for every black woman in Hollywood.
4. Mary J. Blige’s Could Pull Off A Pair of Historic Wins
Speaking of Mudbound, the film brought Mary J. Blige two nominations, one for Best Supporting Actress and one for Best Original Song. If she wins both, it would be another first for the Oscars.
3. Rachel Morrison Could Become the First Woman to Win Best Cinematography
Win or lose, Mudbound will go down as a truly historic film. For her work on the movie, Rachel Morrison became the first woman to be nominated for Best Cinematography.
2. Yance Ford Could Become the First Trans Director To Win An Oscar
Nominated for the haunting documentary, Strong Island, Yance Ford is the first transgender director to be nominated for an Academy Award and just might be the first to win.
1. We Could See Multiple Milestones in The Best Director Race
The Best Director race could go in a couple historic directions. Jordan Peele could become the first black filmmaker to win in this category for Get Out. He could also become the first black person win the Best Original Screenplay award. If Greta Gerwig of Ladybird were to win Best Director, she’d be the second to do so right after Kathryn Bigelow.
