AMC’s The Walking Dead is currently in the midst of its eighth season with the spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead, set to premiere its fourth season on April 15. The fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: The Game is also expected to debut sometime in 2018. It appears even more of the hit zombie franchise is on the horizon, as showrunner Scott M. Gimple has plans for additional spinoffs.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gimple stated, “We have a bunch of different things in mind. Some things that are really complimentary to the stuff we’re doing now and some stuff that’s far afield and very different.”
As for what might be in store for the franchise, Gimple hinted that we may see some established characters take center stage.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to do it. We’re seeing different lengths of seasons and different formats — though I’m not talking about a 37-minute series. I’m talking about different ways to tell stories, possibly with characters we know and possibly with characters we don’t [know],” he stated.
While any potential spinoffs are still in the developing stages, Gimple seems optimistic about the future of The Walking Dead.
“We’re figuring it all out right now but there’s a ton of stuff that I want to dive into. It’s us organizing it and deciding how to do it, how it all works together. We really have a plan that goes into the future. It’s pretty exciting right now.”
Although The Walking Dead maintains a loving fanbase, the AMC series recently hit its lowest ratings since Season One, according to Variety. This drop might be attributed to the death of a certain character we all thought would be around much longer. Could a spinoff breathe new life into the franchise? In any case, the parent show has already been renewed for a ninth season.
