Live-Action Street Fighter TV Series In Development

By nick-spake,

For over thirty years, Street Fighter has dominated as one of the definitive fighting game franchises. Capcom’s hit video game series hasn’t translated too well into other mediums, however. The 1994 live-action movie is a guilty pleasure at best and the same can be said about the animated series that ran from 1995 to 1997. Then again, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is arguably the greater video game film ever made. That’s not saying much, but at least it says something. Mark Gordon of Entertainment One is aiming to deliver another knockout with a live-action television adaptation.

According to Deadline, the show will be executive produced by Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella, and Mark Wooding, the same team behind the Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist web series. The show will draw inspiration from the World Warrior story arc, which emerged from 1991’s Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. Our heroes will of course include the likes of Ryu, Ken, Guile, and Chun-Li, who must battle against the villainous M. Bison of Shadaloo. To take him down, the protagonists must fight their way through the World Warrior Tournament.

“Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere,” Mark Gordon stated. “A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.”

Adapting video games to television and the silver screen is no easy feat. The most recent attempt was the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander, which received mixed reviews from critics, but has performed fairly well at the box office. Will the new Street Fighter series be a rare adaptation that breaks the curse? Well even if it doesn’t, at least we have Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection to look forward to in May 2018.
