10 Hidden Secrets in Super Mario Bros Wonder

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 secrets you may not have noticed yet in “Super Mario Bros. Wonder”!

Paying Respects

“Mario Wonder’s” first world does such an excellent job at setting expectations for what the rest of the game is like. And one of the first token challenges implies that the development team may have been inspired by another Mario game of old. Collect all five tokens, and a pleasant tune will play. If it sounds familiar, that’s because it is the music for the bonus rooms you’d find in “Super Mario World”. With so many secrets to find and creative level design on display, the developers were clearly inspired by “Mario World”, and putting in this song was a pleasant surprise to some of us older fans.

Fake Flags

Now, if you’ve been playing before watching this video, some of you may be confused about finishing a course while still missing an extra Wonder Seed. You don’t have to go crazy searching high and low, checking and re-checking the same spots over and over again. “Mario Wonder” does feature fake flags, flags that pop up a lot earlier than they probably should. That said, you may want to make sure you’re thinking outside of the box during the Wonder Flower segments and make sure you’ve really scoured the course.

Ready for Adventure!

Speaking of searching every corner, “Mario Wonder” does hide a familiar face. Some levels are hiding famed explorer Captain Toad, who will reward you purple coins when you find him. As expected, finding him is no easy task. The adorable adventurer is tucked away in some tricky spots, meaning you might have to come back with a specific power-up or badge to reach him.

They’re a Secret to Everyone…Literally

It is very easy to stick with the seven main characters to maintain the game’s difficulty. However, you shouldn’t dismiss Nabbit and the Yoshis entirely. Chances are you have already noticed special hidden blocks that pop up at random times. These are Character Blocks, blocks that are only revealed when a specific character is within their vicinity. Most of the time, you can get power-ups from these, but they may also give extra coins or reveal secret pathways. So, yeah, maybe let little bro or sister play the easy mode characters!

Park Patrol

The Elephant Fruit is the best power-up in “Mario Wonder”. It’s hard to find someone who says otherwise, too. But being an elephant can go beyond just flailing your trunk around. By now, you already know you can douse enemies with water. However, if you’re on the hunt for some extra purple coins, it does help to water the plants on the stage. Heck, some of them might even reveal more than just coins! So, feel free to stop and do some gardening for a bit!

Shell-Juggling

Your trunk is also good at launching not just enemies, but also the shells of Koopa Troopas and snails. Thing is that playing hot potato with their remains isn’t just for you to giggle at. Juggle a shell enough times, and it will disappear. You’ll also get some extra coins for your dexterity! It isn’t much, but it is a mechanic that was way too fun for the developers to not include.

Rainbow Finish

Speaking of fun things the devs didn’t need to include, the rainbow finish! Who would have thought to finish a course with water as an elephant? Doing so doesn’t net you anything substantial. All it does is play a cute animation where you water the Poplin, the Poplin blooms, and a small rainbow appears! Nothing substantial, but it does show how much personality and fun there is packed into the game.

Urchins in Love

In “New Super Mario Bros. Wii”, World 4-3 hides a secret pipe that will lead you to a room with two Urchins and a heart made of coins. Cute, yet something you would think would never really resonate with anyone. It’s a small, fun bit. However, players have quickly discovered that the Urchins have returned in “Super Mario Bros. Wonder”. This time, it isn’t just the two Urchins, but two Cheep Cheeps as well! It’s so nice to see the family continue to grow.

Special World

Remember earlier when we pointed out how “Wonder’s” development team was inspired by “Super Mario World”? Well, if you didn’t buy Exhibit A: The Song, then we present to you Exhibit B: Special World. Each world in “Mario Wonder” hides a secret exit that leads to a couple of Special World’s levels. You will need to find every exit in order to access every level in the area. Not only that, these are the hardest levels in the entire game. And you want to know the funny part? You won’t even be done with the game after these!

Sound Off?

Upon beating Special World and obtaining every Wonder Seed in the game, you will unlock the ultimate final level - The Final Final Test Badge Marathon. Many have been calling this the hardest Mario level. Ever. What do you get for conquering this tall, tall feat? You are rewarded with a badge called “Sound Off?”, and its effect changes with every course. If you truly want to see everything “Mario Wonder” has to offer, well, we wish you luck!
