#3: “Thor: Ragnarok” to Pass $600 Million This Weekend

Looks like there is no stopping the God of Thunder. According to Forbes, Thor: Ragnarok will continue its frantic pace at the box office and surpass $600 million in total box office gross. So far, that is. If Taika Waititi’s popular reimagining of the Norse God holds its momentum, the film could knock off money-making machines Transformers: The Last Knight and even fellow Marvel comrade Logan to sneak into 2017’s top 10. The movie may eventually see its numbers slow down, as it will face off against two other blockbusters looking to take over box office buzz. DC’s Justice League is set for release November 16th, and arguably, the year’s most anticipated film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is sure to garner attention when it’s released December 15th. Thor: Ragnarok currently sits at an impressive 93% on rotten tomatoes and is the highest rated of all three Thor films.

#2: “Blade Runner 2049” to Lose $80 Million

With a solid 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, Many critics considered Denis Villeneuve and Ryan Gosling’s Blade Runner 2049 a stunning achievement in cinema. But that doesn’t always equal ticket sales. According to The Hollywood reporter, producer Alcon Entertainment and its business partners are about to incur a staggering $80 million in debt after the film’s poor showing at the box office. While Alcon finds themselves in the red, Sony, who co-financed the production and is also distributing the movie, is set to earn back their $110 million investment due to an agreement that was put in place between them and Alcon. The sequel cost between $150-185 million to produce, before marketing and advertising expenses, but has earned only $240.8 million globally. According to industry trackers, the film needs to reach $400 million to become profitable.

Before we get to our final entry, here are a couple new releases:

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017)
“Daddy’s Home 2” (2017)

#1: Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Director Rian Johnson to Create All-New Star Wars Trilogy

Just a little over a month before Star Wars: The Last Jedi sweeps the movie world by storm, Lucasfilm has announced that its director Ryan Johnson is about to get to work on a brand-spanking-new Star Wars trilogy. According to starwars.com, Johnson will create an all-new trilogy, directing and writing the first installment with long time collaborator Ram Bergman producing. The trilogy will be completely separate from the Luke Skywalker saga fans have come to know and love. Johnson will be creating new characters from a part of the galaxy that the franchise has never touched upon before, so fans will be getting three completely unique and fresh films. In the press release, President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy stated that she has tremendous faith in Johnson, saying “Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” Unfortunately, no release dates or castings have been announced.
