Recipe: How to Make Homemade Pound Cake
The original recipe for this cake included a pound of butter, a pound of sugar, a pound of eggs and a pound of flour – can you guess what we’re making?
Ingredients:
- 3 large room temperature eggs
- 3 tbsp room temperature milk
- 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups sifted cake flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 13 tbsp room temperature unsalted butter, which is equal to ½ cup + ⅓ cup
Directions:
1. After preheating your oven to 350°, prepare a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan by coating it with butter or cooking spray. Then line the bottom with parchment, and butter or spray the paper.Whether you serve it with fresh cream and berries, or as part of a chocolate fondue plate, pound cake is a versatile, traditional and delicious dessert option!
2. Now, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla in a medium bowl.
3. For the next step you can either use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer. Put your dry ingredients into the bowl of your mixer and mix it on low for 30 seconds until it’s all blended together.
4. Next, add the butter and half of the egg mixture and mix it on low until the dry ingredients are moistened.
5. Now increase the speed to medium and beat it for a minute. Then scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the rest of the egg mix in two additions. Beat for about 30 seconds after each addition to make sure it’s all incorporated.
6. Your batter is ready: scrape into your prepared pan, and smooth the top layer with the back of a spoon if necessary.
7. Bake your pound cake for about 55-65 minutes or until it’s golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If you notice your cake browning too much, you can always cover it with some greased aluminum foil halfway through the baking time.
8. Once your cake is ready, remove it from the oven and leave it to cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes – then remove it from the pan and leave it to cool on a greased wire rack.
