Newfoundland and Labrador: Top Attractions
This is the easternmost province in Canada. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we're taking a look at some of the cultural attractions and outdoor activities you can check out while visiting Newfoundland and Labrador.
Culture and People
Aside from the province's wild beauty, Newfoundland and Labrador is known for its good-natured people, its local dialect and its traditional culture.
Fishing and Lighthouses
Newfoundland and Labrador is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and this has provided the province with numerous benefits. Sea travel is important in this Atlantic province due to its proximity to the water. This is evident by the presence of multiple lighthouses, such as the Point Amour lighthouse. Not only that, but Newfoundland and Labrador also has a long fishing history, so a trip to Canada's east coast isn't complete without a taste of the seafood.
European Traditions
Newfoundland and Labrador is very proud of its culture, which has been influenced by traditions from Ireland, England and Scotland. Like those countries, there is no shortage of venues where you can be entertained by folk music. You can also learn about the province's history through performances that recreate past events and customs.
Historical Attractions
Labrador itself is home to numerous historical attractions. At the Torngat Mountains National Park, you'll find aboriginal landmarks like Inuksuk stone structures. When it comes to settlements, there is the northern Inuit town of Nain, which was a former mission of the Protestant denomination of the Moravian Church during the 18th century. Another former Moravian mission in the north is Hebron, which is now protected as a National Historic site. In the south, you'll find Cartwright, which became a settled community in the 1700s and was named after English trader and explorer George Cartwright.
Outdoor Activities
Thanks to its diverse geography, Newfoundland and Labrador is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities. During warmer seasons, travelers can enjoy the view at any of the parks, or you can try hiking at Torngat Mountains National Park.
Winter Sports
During the winter you can head to a resort for some downhill and cross-country skiing or even some snowboarding. More adventurous types may want to try zip lining or riding a snowmobile. You can even go dog sledding!
