A teen who got his shapeshifting powers from his scientist father, it resulted in experiments conducted in the hope of unlocking the secret of “reverse evolution”. However, once Dr. Logan discovered the key to reverse evolution, Garfield fell ill with a rare disease that kills all but the West African green monkey. Knowing this, his father used reverse evolution on his son to change him to defeat the disease, which resulted in green skin and giving him the ability to assume the shape of any animal. Some guys are often accused of behaving in a beastly manner; with this superhero, there’s good reason for that. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will explore the comic book origin of Beast Boy.
As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen primarily to follow the storyline that unfolded in Doom Patrol #99-100, which was slightly revised in Teen Titans Vol. 3, #13.
The shape-shifting teen known as Beast Boy has been a big presence in the DC Universe since he burst on the scene in Doom Patrol #99 back in 1965. When the Doom Patrol first met Beast Boy, whose real name is Garfield Logan, they weren’t sure what to make of him. The wisecracking teen had infiltrated their headquarters to prove his worth and join them, but the Doom Patrol wasn’t keen on the brash youngster.
The World’s Strangest Heroes, as the Doom Patrol was labelled, allowed Logan to join them for one adventure. Although he proved himself adept at fighting crime, the team declined to offer Logan membership.
That didn’t stop the cheeky teen from showing up in the next issue, ready for action. Although he once again proved himself a match for Robotman, he was still dismissed. As he left, readers learned that Gar Logan (incorrectly named “Craig” in this issue) was a rich orphan whose guardian was an untrustworthy miser by the name of Galtry.
Galtry had taken a bribe so that Logan would participate in an experiment for a shady scientist named Dr. Weir. The experiment turns out to be a hypnosis session and soon after, a series of bizarre crimes begin – crimes perpetrated by dinosaurs that should have been dead millions of years ago.
Suspecting a link, the Doom Patrol brings in Logan, who tells them how he got his powers. His father was a scientist conducting experiments in Africa in the hope of unlocking the secret of “reverse evolution” – taking an animal and evolving it backwards so that it became its prehistoric ancestor.
The day that Dr. Logan discovered the key to reverse evolution, Gar fell ill with sakutia, a rare disease that was inevitably fatal in all animals – except the West African green monkey. Dr. Logan used reverse evolution on his son to change him into a green monkey for 24 hours, thus defeating the disease – and at the same time turning his skin permanently green and giving him the ability to assume the shape of any animal.
Gar used his abilities to save his mother from a deadly snake, but when his parents were caught in a boating accident, Gar was unable to prevent their deaths. His father left him a key to a safe containing the secret of reverse evolution – and Dr. Weir had stolen that key while Gar was under hypnosis.
The Doom Patrol now officially took Gar in as one of the team, naming him BeastBoy and giving him an official costume. Together they defeated Weir, thus starting Beast Boy's long career as a superhero with the Doom Patrol, the Teen Titans and the Ravagers.
Over the years, there have been some very slight modifications to Beast Boy’s origin. Although the story of how he got his powers has stayed generally the same, recently it was revised a bit: according to the current origin, Dr. Logan was working with another scientist on finding the missing genetic link between man and animal. In addition, Gar contracted the deadly sakutia disease after being bitten by an infected green monkey.
Beast Boy has played a prominent role on the "Teen Titans" and "Teen Titans Go!" television series. He was also featured on some episodes of "Young Justice." His highly visual superpower makes him a natural for animation.
