Top 10 Anime of Fall 2018
For this list, we'll be looking at both new shows and sequel seasons that were released in the Fall of this year, ranking them on which ones managed to rock our socks off with their awesome premises and quirky characters. As usual, we won't be including titles that are carrying over from the summer season. Bring on the next-gen waifus!
#10: “Zombie Land Saga” (2018)

Don’t go into this one expecting some kind of zombie horror epic, this show is all about the laughs. After being killed in a car accident and resurrected a la the Walking Dead, Sakura finds herself taken in by a somewhat crazy make-up artist determined to create the perfect idol group. Before you can say Nico Nico Necrophilia, he’s gathered a group of deceased former idols (and Sakura for some reason) in order take the town of Saga by storm. If that’s not enough to pique your interest, then just wait until you meet the Legendary Tae Yamada!
#9: “Hinomaru Sumo” (2018)
We’ve had a few contenders for best new sports show of the year, but from the looks of things, Hinomaru and the rest of his Sumo Squad are looking to set the scene ablaze. With the goal of becoming the best team in Japan, a group of students from all walks of life are brought together under the banner of the short-statured yet fiercely determined Hinomaru, whose passion for the sport is only me matched by his demonic skills in the ring. The cast are great, the bouts are oddly intense, even if you’ve never even heard of sumo, you’re bound to be swept up by the series’ charm.
#8: “Golden Kamuy” Season Two (2018)
It may have had fun moments here and there, but many fans were in agreement that the first season of this acclaimed narrative was lacking in places, especially when it came to the pacing. However, this latest addition appears to have erased the original’s issues almost completely. With Sugimoto and Asirpa’s hunt for the Ainu gold fraught with more danger than ever, this sequel series has practically overloaded us with do-or-die situations, intriguing mystery, and plenty of bloody scuffles. Let’s hope it doesn’t lose momentum again!
#7: “Goblin Slayer” (2018)
While the first episode certainly caused some controversy, those that are looking for another dark fantasy anime to add to their line-up can’t go wrong with this little dungeon crawler. With the single goal of wiping out goblins from the world, our titular monster hunter finds himself teamed up with a set of companions straight out of your classic D&D adventure. It doesn’t hold back on the blood or mature content, so if you can stomach the harshness that comes from a world like this, then just sit back and watch little green heads roll.
#6: “Fairy Tail” Final Season (2018)

Natsu is back in all of his fiery glory, and from the looks of things he’s brought along his greatest and most entertaining adventure to date. With the members of Fairy Tail now disbanded and the forces of Zeref on the move, it’s down to the dragonslayer to regroup with his comrades and save the land from the oncoming darkness. Given how he’s gained a serious power boost during the time-skip, we’re fully expecting to see some of the best fights the show has ever seen to debut soon. Either that or maybe we’ll see some of those ships finally come into port. Get a move on Juvia!
#5: “A Certain Magical Index III” (2018)

It’s another day for the likes of Touma, which of course translates to a series of extremely unlucky circumstances. However, things have taken a far more sinister turn, given how Academy City is in hot water with the Catholic Church, with the deadly members of God’s Right Seat ready to go biblical on every esper they find. Things may be looking bleak, but you can always count on Touma, Misaka and Accelerator to pull a win out of the bag. Here’s hoping we’re due some pretty epic psychic conflicts down the line.
#4: “Sword Art Online: Alicization” (2018)

Talk about coming back with a vengeance. Gun Gale Online may have wet our appetites, but no one was expecting the likes of Kirito to make a return with such an intriguing narrative and animation on par with most animated movies. Seriously, look at this! What kind of budget did this show have?! Regardless, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to hop back into this series, then Alicization is your golden ticket. By itself, this might stand as the definitive SAO experience.
#3: “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” (2018)

We like to consider this little gem the bizarro version of Overlord. We have a modern protagonist suddenly transported to a vast fantasy world, wherein they find themselves inhabiting a new body along with the capacity to become the most powerful MVP of them all. However, what Slime does so well is create a merry atmosphere that you can’t help but rally behind Rimuru as he adapts to life as a sentient blob capable of absorbing all manner of abilities. Throw in a tsundere dragon, plenty of meta humour, goblins who are actually nice, sexy elves, some pretty slick battles, and this fantasy show has already established itself as the one to beat!
#2: “Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai” (2018)
Where did this mini-masterpiece come from? In the vapid sea that is the rom-com genre, we were fully prepared for another show that glorified fanservice over substance, but much to our surprise we were presented with a touching human story with just the slightest hint of the supernatural. After discovering a girl at his school dressed in a playboy bunny outfit, Sakuta finds his life taking a drastic new direction as he falls for a school senior who can’t be seen by others. The romance is unique, the characters are painfully human, and we can all agree that Mai is clearly Best Girl of 2018.

It’s JoJo, what did you expect? The newest member of the Joestar lineage has managed to literally light up the screen with his debut. With the goal of becoming Italy’s number one Gang-Star in the hope of protecting innocent people, Giorno Giovanna has proven himself to be a much shadier protagonist that those that have come before him, which isn’t surprising since he’s got the blood of Dio running through his veins. He may occupy a more morally grey area, but he’s still bringing him all the JoJo tropes we’ve come to adore, including Stands, crazy battles and more fashion choices that make us question our life choices. Now that’s fighting gold.
