Top 10 Best Movie Reboots PERIOD
VOICE OVER: Patrick Mealey WRITTEN BY: Andy Hammersmith
These movies earned their place in the canon. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the film franchises that were rebooted for the better. This list doesn't include direct remakes or legacy sequels. Our countdown includes “Batman Begins", “Star Trek”, “The Muppets”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Casino Royale”, and more!

#10: “Godzilla” (2014)

This monster has been entertaining audiences with its destructive tendencies since the 1950s. The reboot features a strong emphasis on the humans trying to deal with the titular creature. A family story puts the larger plot in a tragic context, with Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s father and son guiding this tale. There’s also plenty of engaging action between humans and the gigantic beings. In some cases, the filmmakers find effective ways to show the violence from a ground-level perspective. By the end, you have a connection to the characters and get to enjoy Godzilla fighting the MUTOs.

#9: “The Muppets” (2011)

With new songs and a funny story, this movie expands the Muppets universe. It also pays homage to what made the characters so enjoyable in the first place. All of your favorites from Kermit to Miss Piggy appear, hoping to save their theater from destruction. There’s also an endearing story about two brothers that gives the story tons of heart. Full of life and energy, Jason Segel and Amy Adams feel right at home in a whimsical, entertaining, and hilarious adventure. You also can’t come away without humming amazing tunes like “Man or Muppet.” Brimming with positivity, this feel-good film can make you laugh, cry, and cheer.

#8: “Batman Begins” (2005)

After the 1990s, this DC character needed a major overhaul to recapture audiences’ attention. Director Christopher Nolan stepped up to the task with a signature vision, an impressive cast, and a more serious take on Bruce Wayne. The result gives viewers a look at the man’s origin story, rebuilding him into a person with more complexity and darkness. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Cillian Murphy give three stellar performances amongst other talented actors. Nolan also treats the action sequences with care as he reinvents the Batmobile. Everything fits into place, setting course for an iconic trilogy of Batman films. This gritty take on the world’s greatest detective also paved the way for the likes of Matt Reeves’ reboot.

#7: “Halloween” (2018)

During his prison transfer, Michael Myers escapes custody and wreaks havoc once more. He then chops his way through a slew of victims in this reboot of “Halloween.” In the latest trilogy, Laurie Strode struggles with the trauma of her past while also preparing to fight the villain. This time around you get to see just how much the original attacks have affected the heroine and her family. Not shy about blood, the film also features all kinds of gory encounters that’ll have you wincing. When Myers reaches Strode’s house, it all comes down to a fantastic showdown between the two. Retconning all of the other sequels, this bold new direction gives the franchise more emotional depth and plenty of scares.

#6: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011)

Creating a new origin story for the series, this movie starts with Will Rodman’s experiments on chimpanzees. One of the animals proves to be smarter than anyone could’ve expected. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” asks big questions about science, animal cruelty, and evolution. Caesar then becomes imprisoned, but rises up against his human captors. It’s an inspiring and frightening tale featuring important ideas and big spectacle. Playing the key role, Andy Serkis also turns in another incredible performance with motion-capture technology. As the apes storm the Golden Gate Bridge, the movie sets up a fresh and action-packed franchise.

#5: “The Invisible Man” (2020)

If you haven’t seen the original film from 1933, you can rest assured that it’s completely different from the 2020 version. This movie takes the basic concept of an invisible man and overhauls it with much darker themes. Cecilia escapes her awful boyfriend, but he fakes his death and tortures her with a special suit. This allows him to ruin his ex’s life, from taunting her in the night to attacking the people closest to her. The diabolical premise turns a toxic relationship into an entertaining thriller. Mixing horror and reality, “The Invisible Man” keeps you on edge the whole way through.

#4: “Creed” (2015)

Living in the shadow of his father, Adonis Creed wants to prove himself. He teams up with Rocky Balboa to train as a boxer. The hero’s captivating journey builds upon the original series, honoring the older fighter and letting the younger one come into his own. Their chemistry gives the film humor and heart in between some intense matches. It also gives Creed something else to fight for as Balboa’s health fails, prompting some emotional scenes between the two. As amazing as the boxing is in the older movies, director Ryan Coogler crafts several sequences that stack up against the initial entries. The last contest gives audiences more inspiring material as this triumphant story comes to a close.

#3: “Star Trek” (2009)

There have been so many films and TV shows in this franchise that it needed to hit the reset button. J.J. Abrams’ version gives the characters from the original series an origin story they deserve. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto fill out a brilliant ensemble, setting up an Enterprise crew that’s more vibrant than ever. Their interplay, charisma, and arguments set a course for all kinds of entertaining adventures. “Star Trek” is as thrilling during big action scenes as it is during important conversations. With a cameo from Leonard Nimoy, the movie also salutes the artists that paved the way for the franchise. Abrams figures out a way to serve the story, let the actors flourish, and set up some exciting space battles.

#2: “Casino Royale” (2006)

When the time came to revitalize James Bond, Daniel Craig assumed the role and exceeded expectations. His take on the secret agent is much more grounded. This film follows Bond as he gets his first assignments, showing you a more conflicted and complex version of the character. From crane fights to foot chases, the action has an edge to it that feels more dangerous. There’s also ample chemistry between Craig and co-star Eva Green as the enigmatic Vesper Lynd. Rewriting the character for a new generation, “Casino Royale” raised the bar for future installments in the long-running series.

#1: “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015)

Decades after his last entry in the series, director George Miller returned with a completely new look at his post-apocalyptic world. There’s a new Max, along with an equally compelling character Furiosa. With one chase after the other, Miller rarely gives you time to breathe in this non-stop thrill ride. The two fight each other before uniting to bring down Immortan Joe. Reinvigorating the action genre, the film continuously outdoes itself with impressive visuals and outrageous stunts. While there are some nods to the original franchise, “Mad Max: Fury Road” charts a new path with a style all its own.
