#10: Bel Powley
First on our list, an actress who started out on children’s television. Bel Powley broke into acting with a spot on the CBBC series “M.I. High”, and her career has gone from strength to strength ever since. Her star-making turn in “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” quickly gained her wider recognition, while a role in 2017’s Mary Shelley biopic, and a spot as part of the stellar cast for 2018’s “White Boy Rick”, ensure that Bel’s profile will only get bigger, and better.
#9: Suki Waterhouse
We’ve seen British models become big screen stars before; think Cara Delevingne. But Suki Waterhouse has so far flown under the radar, in comparison. She has been quietly gaining praise through smaller roles in films like “Love, Rosie”, “Insurgent” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”. However, 2017 saw her debut as the lead in the Ana Lily Amirpour film, “The Bad Batch”. While that film divided opinion, Suki’s role demanded attention. Watch this space.
#8: George Mackay
George Mackay has been acting since a young age, making his debut in the 2003 live-action adaptation of “Peter Pan”. But he has been making significant waves in recent years, thanks to performances in “Sunshine on Leith” and “Pride”. He finally reached international attention for his role in “Captain Fantastic”, at times stealing the show away from its star, Viggo Mortensen. A versatile talent with lots of potential, he’s set for big things.
#7: Phoebe Waller-Bridge
As an actress of both stage and screen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge shot to stardom thanks to her one-woman comedy show, “Fleabag”, which gained international recognition when it was adapted for TV by the BBC and distributed globally by Amazon. With a BAFTA already under her belt, Waller-Bridge is prepped for even greater stardom after snagging a supporting role in the 2018 Han Solo film. From there, the sky’s the limit.
#6: Florence Pugh
This actor’s credits list is relatively short, but she has already caught interest with the critics. Debuting alongside Maisie Williams in “The Falling”, Florence Pugh has quickly shown that she can hold the screen. Her star potential was further confirmed by her performance in the lead role in “Lady Macbeth”, where she showed a talent for playing a master manipulator. Pugh’s slate isn’t stacked with upcoming blockbusters, but it seems only a matter of time before Hollywood snaps her up.
#5: Sophie Turner
Sophie Turner had the great advantage of making her acting debut in one of the most popular television shows in history. As Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones”, her character has matured from a naive girl into a strong and wise woman. Turner has since scored a major part in another franchise, succeeding the role of Jean Grey in the “X-Men” series. With a greater part set for the upcoming sequel, “Dark Phoenix”, the future’s very bright.
#4: Daniel Kaluuya
First known as Posh Kenneth on “Skins”, Daniel Kaluuya has recently broken onto the international stage. After smaller roles in films like “Johnny English Reborn”, “Kick-Ass 2” and “Sicario”, Kaluuya finally landed a leading part in the Jordan Peele horror, “Get Out”. An unexpected smash hit, Kaluuya has since become hot property. With a supporting role already set for Marvel’s “Black Panther”, also watch out for his spot on Steve McQueen’s 2018 heist movie, “Widows”.
#3: Taron Egerton
Plucked out of relative obscurity by director Matthew Vaughn, Taron Egerton went from small TV and theatre roles to a lead part in one of cinema’s most promising new franchises. Buoyed by Kingsman’s success, he’s not afraid to branch out, with a supporting role in Sing”, and a star turn as Olympic hero Eddie Edwards in “Eddie the Eagle”. With more “Kingsman” carnage to come, Egerton will also star as the titular hero in the new “Robin Hood”. Hollywood’s upper echelons are his for the taking.
#2: Tom Holland
From on-stage dancing as Billy Elliot to swinging through the streets of New York as Spider-Man, Tom Holland has made some immense career moves in a short space of time. He impressed with supporting roles in “The Impossible” and “How I Live Now”, but after being cast as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new world of possibilities opened up. Now set to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming “Uncharted” adaptation, Tom Holland is well on his way to being a modern movie legend.
#1: Daisy Ridley
What better place to make your major acting debut than in “Star Wars”? Taking centre stage as Rey in “The Force Awakens”, Daisy Ridley announced herself to the world. And her stock is only set to rise. She reprises Rey in “The Last Jedi”, and she has a seat on Kenneth Brannagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express”. She’s bagged the title role in 2018’s Hamlet reimagining, “Ophelia”, and 2019 promises a leading part in “Chaos Walking”. In short, she’s got lots on. And no doubt she’ll smash everything she does.
