Top 10 Video Games Guaranteed to Boost Your Mood
#10: “Untitled Goose Game” (2019)
“Untitled Goose Game” gives you one goal and one goal only: become goose. This doesn’t just mean go around and honk at people, though that is something you can choose to do. Every puzzle requires you to be a nuisance in some way, and no matter how many times you mess up, the game never really punishes you. While there are bonus challenges for those wanting to speedrun, “Untitled Goose Game” just wants you to be annoying in the funniest ways possible. It’s here to make you laugh now - you can sweat later.
#9: “Planet Coaster” (2016)
Of course, going to sandbox games are always a good way to relieve stress and focus on something less taxing. For us, “Planet Coaster” is that game. While there is a Career mode with goals and management challenges, there is a Sandbox mode for those wanting to simply build and play. After all, this is a game centered on building your dream theme park. Why not let some of us go nuts and build our dream roller coaster haunted by evil spirits or assemble the pirate show of a lifetime? You get a ton of freedom to create something you’ve always wanted in a theme park, and there are plenty of options to explore and play in.
#8: “Kirby’s Epic Yarn” (2010)
We could have chosen any “Kirby” game for this list, but “Epic Yarn” in particular is impossible to play while sad. Between the upbeat music and cutesy atmosphere, the game clearly wants you to just enjoy yourself in a way you want. You don’t have to worry about beating a time limit. Simply look for secrets to nab new stickers and furniture for your apartment. Sure, there are Waddle Dees running around in some areas, but you’ll rarely find many threats in the world of Patch Land. So, enjoy Kirby’s cute noises and transformations.
#7: “PowerWash Simulator” (2022)
Power-washing may not be something everyone can enjoy in real life, but in video game form it’s another level of satisfaction. Perhaps it's the slow reveal in how more fantastical elements are at play? However one may feel, there is a feeling of accomplishment in cleaning a subway tunnel all by yourself or an ancient statue with a friend. Plus, playing solo gives you an excuse to shut your brain off and chill to some music or listen to a podcast. There really isn’t any reason to stress about a job in this game unless you’re going for those medals in Challenge mode.
#6: “Forza Horizon 5” (2021)
The most recent entry in the “Forza Horizon” games, “Horizon 5” has you racing across Mexico. However, competitive racing isn’t the only activity here. You’ll find plenty of missions that only want you to take part in cool stunts or obstacle courses. And if you aren’t feeling like you want to race or do stunts, you have unfettered access to the entire world. Hunt for XP boards, find garages to unlock more cars, or just take a casual drive in your favorite car while jamming to one of the many in-game radio stations. The world truly is your oyster here, so enjoy driving in whatever way you’re feeling!
#5: “Lego” series (2005-)
The “Lego” games may have risks and goals, but for the most part, they really don’t try to inflict a ton of stress on you. Heck, even the boss fights won’t make you sweat like most games do. The games mainly want you to go at your own pace, explore for collectibles, and just have a good time. Take a break to fight your friend, check out the other unlockables you’ve earned, run around and free roam for a bit, anything you want. Just make sure you aren’t dying too much before you fill the stud meter or else you might have to replay some levels.
#4: “Katamari” series (2004-)
We can easily chalk up “Katamari’s” placement here to its music. Seriously, these games have excellent songs like “Into the Sky” and “Lonely Rolling Star”! However, “Katamari” has something truly mesmerizing in its gameplay. Rolling stuff up and watching your Katamari slowly get bigger and bigger is immensely satisfying. While Daddy Dearest, the King of All Cosmos, may not approve of every katamari you make, his cold attitude is only a part of the game’s surreal humor. So, don’t feel bad about your efforts if he’s getting too persnickety over your rolling.
#3: “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” (2023)
The very second you hit the second level, it’s impossible to pull away from “Super Mario Bros. Wonder”. With every level having a Wonder Flower hidden inside, it’s hard to think about anything else while you’re exploring. You’re too busy eagerly anticipating the next crazy thing to happen! Are the Koopas going to start singing now? Why are there bubbles everywhere suddenly? Every idea offers a fun and unique way to play, and it never pushes you to pull off crazy maneuvers unless you’re going for total completion. And even when you die, it’s hard to get mad at the game or yourself.
#2: “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” (2020)
“New Horizons” has truly captured a massive playerbase, and understandably so. This is a game where you can build the ultimate island getaway and customize it to your heart’s content. Craft furniture, decor, even structures to place around your park. But the biggest draw was the multiplayer. It’s so easy and entertaining to see what our friends did with their islands compared to ours, and we could fish, catch bugs, design outfits, or just hang out just as we would in real life. As for Tom Nook, he isn’t so demanding on repayment like he was in the old days.
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions…
“Minecraft” (2011)
Creative Mode Is the Perfect Way to Unleash Your Imagination
“Spiritfarer” (2020)
Joyful Despite Its Subject Matter, but You’ll Sob With Tears of Joy
“Kingdom Hearts” series (2002-)
You’ll Never Forget Donald’s One Rule
#1: “Stardew Valley” (2016)
“Stardew Valley” truly is the one game where you can find complete solace in regardless of who you are or what you’re going through. Whether you want to experience the story, form a relationship, build the best farm possible, or simply fish for fun, there is absolutely no stress hoisted upon you to hit goals. There is no time limit outside the day-night cycle. There is no pressure to hit the next story beat. You can play at your own pace and do whatever interests you in the moment. And regardless of what you choose to do, the relaxing music and welcoming characters are there to chill with you.
