Top 10 Greatest Female Supervillains
#10: Ma-Ma “Dredd” (2012)
Madeline Madrigal, or “Ma-Ma” as she’s known on the streets, is the consummate villain: she’s power-hungry, sadistic, and has zero regard for human life. As a criminal mastermind and drug-lord, she’s responsible for ravaging an entire slum population and killing mercilessly to get what she wants. She also serves as Dredd’s nemesis and the primary antagonist in the film. Plus her scars are pretty cool, too.
#9: The Baroness “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (2009)
She’s a ruthless femme fatale who would just as soon see you dead as invite you out for a nice seafood dinner. As a valuable member of the Cobra Command, she knows her way around nanomite warheads and hand-to-hand combat. She may end up switching sides, but she puts up one helluva fight when playing for the bad guys.
#8: Emma Frost “X-Men: First Class” (2011)
Sometimes, a girl’s gotta use what she’s got in order to get the job done. In Emma Frost’s case, that includes a diamond-hard exterior that can cut through double-plated glass. Ms. Frost is not to be trifled with, and her cool, calm demeanour belies her ruthless dedication to her mutant species. In fact, she’s so icy, even her telepathic abilities can give you frostbite.
#7: Lady Deathstrike “X2: X-Men United” (2003)
Wolverine isn’t the only indestructible mutant with crazy adamantium skills. Lady Deathstrike pairs her fingernails of death with, supreme fighting abilities and proves to be an equal match for everyone’s favorite mutant bad boy. Her claws and killing ability make her a formidable foe, if not a terrifying one. She wastes no time giving Wolverine the business, and even though she loses the match, she does not go down easily.
#6: Ursa “Superman I & II” (1978-80)
She’s a female Kryptonian who kills for the fun of it and strikes fear in the hearts of men across the universe. She pretty much hates all humans on sight and derives a great sense of satisfaction from destroying all kinds of things. From people’s faces to snakes to Lex Luthor – nothing is safe. She’s a villain with a taste for destruction, and her superpowers make her that much more dangerous.
#5: Faora-Ul “Man of Steel” (2013)
To put it lightly, Faora-Ul is frightening. She’s Zod’s sub-commander and a leader of the Kryptonian military who is completely devoted and loyal to her General. Ruthless, cold, and brutal in her methods, Faora’s military training and skills make her a very dangerous opponent to Superman. Her expertise in close quarters combat and melee weaponry make her every move lethal and deadly.
#4: Dark Phoenix “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006)
Jean-Grey’s transformation into the Dark Phoenix makes her the ultimate force of destruction with immense power. Her powers make her valuable to both the good and bad mutant factions, but she loosely aligns herself with Magneto’s army and unleashes a reign of annihilation. She’s SO powerful it’s scary, and if it weren’t for some hard heroics, she basically would’ve destroyed the world.
#3: Talia al Ghul “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012)
She’s the villain Gotham….wasn’t expecting. As the child of Ra’s al Ghul, Talia pulls a quick one on Batman and the audience, only later revealing her true identity and desire to put an end to Gotham City. She’s clever, crafty, and most of all, dedicated to her cause. She also spends a lifetime laying down the foundation for her plan, culminating in a final showdown with Batman and a bomb.
#2: Mystique “X-Men” (2000)
As a part of Magneto’s “evil” mutant brotherhood, Mystique is as good as bad gets. She’s cunning and crafty, and her mutant shapeshifting abilities are enough to keep even the most skillful of the X-Men on their toes. She’s dedicated to the domination of the mutant race, which might not be so bad if it didn’t also mean the elimination of all humans worldwide. She’s both a sweet dream and a beautiful nightmare.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
#1: Catwoman “Batman Returns” (1992)
There have been several iterations of Batman’s feline anti-hero, but Michelle Pfeiffer’s turn in the cat-suit is the stuff of movie legend. Selina Kyle-slash-Catwoman serves as both potential lover and nefarious foe to Batman. A true villain in her own right, she’s bent on eradicating Batman and dominating Gotham City. To say her relationship with the caped crusader is complex is an understatement, and their ongoing battle of hero vs. villain on serves to make their flirtation a little strained.
