Top 10 Most Evil Moments in Soap History

Welcome to WatchMojoUK, and today we’re counting down our picks for the darkest, most disturbing, and most evil incidents and stories to have taken place in-universe of UK soap operas.

#10: Killing Best Friend to Hide a Dark Secret

“Emmerdale” (1972-)

Lachlan White did a lot of terrible deeds in his “Emmerdale” stint, from attempting to murder his grandfather, assaulting Alicia, and causing multiple fatal car crashes. But the biggest was what he did to his apparent best friend, Gerry Roberts. After Gerry discovers Lachlan was responsible for the crash that killed his mother and grandfather, he mocks his former cellmate. Fearing the truth would get out, Lachlan lured Gerry to the B&B, which was getting renovated. Seeing the opportunity, Lachlan knocked over a support pole, causing the ceiling to cave in on Gerry, trapping him. Even though he begged for his life, Gerry knew what was coming as Lachlan grabbed a rock and ended his life.

#9: Forcing Yasmeen to Eat Her Pet

“Coronation Street” (1960-)

On the surface, Geoff Metcalfe seemed like a nice guy upon his introduction on “Coronation Street” in 2018. After all, he was a charming chap and a local celebrity as a hospital radio DJ. So, when Geoff started a relationship with Yasmeen Nazir, all seemed well. Then, it wasn’t, as Geoff began abusing and controlling her. In 2019, he played a cruel joke on her that he’d cooked Yasmeen’s pet chicken, Charlotte Brontë. While messed up, at least he didn’t actually go through with it. You can probably sense where this is going. A few months later, in 2020, Geoff did it for real and forced her to eat parts of her beloved pet. Yikes. OFCOM received 359 complaints over this.

#8: The Death of Sue and Danny

“Brookside” (1982-2003)

To coincide with the approaching 1000th episode of “Brookside,” the writers decided a big story was needed to celebrate. So, in a “whodunit,” Sue Sullivan, whilst carrying her infant son Danny, are both on some scaffolding. She speaks to an unknown person, becoming more desperate as the tension increases. Suddenly, Sue and Danny are pushed by the person off the platform to their demise. In a creepy contrast, the unknown character calmly walks to a pay phone to inform emergency services. It was shocking, especially with Danny’s involvement. Eventually, we discovered the culprit was Barry Grant, who’d been having an affair with Sue as she was married to Terry Sullivan.

#7: Tony Grooming Whitney

“Eastenders” (1985-)

The joy of Bianca Jackson's return to the Square in 2008 was quickly turned into despair when Tony King, her partner, joined “Eastenders.” After a stint in jail for attacking a teenage boy for propositioning Bianca’s adoptive daughter, Whitney, we then discover Tom has been grooming her for years and isn’t happy with her being more adult. Yikes. Eventually, Bianca finds out what’s been going on and calls the cops. However, Whitney, who’s been manipulated for years, is conflicted and stands by Tony, especially as he continues to contact her. Whitney eventually realises what he’d done to her at his trial. Tony was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years in prison, apparently taking his own life later on.

#6: Luke's Assault

“Hollyoaks” (1995-)

In 1999, “Hollyoaks” introduced Mark Gibbs. After Luke Morgan broke his leg in a football match, ending Mark’s prospects of playing professionally, he wanted revenge. In 2000’s “Hollyoaks: Breaking Boundaries,” which looked at more intense stories, Mark stepped up his abuse of Luke by assaulting him with the help of friends. With this being the first time male assault was covered in a soap, fans were disturbed and also praised the story for shining a light on such situations. Eventually, Luke goes to the police and Mark and his friends are arrested. They were found guilty and sentenced to jail. In 2017, Luke met Mark again and told his new wife what her husband was really like, leading to her leaving Mark.

#5: Trevor's Abuse of Little Mo

“Eastenders” (1985-)

When most of the Slater clan arrived in 2000 in “Eastenders,” Little Mo popped up with her husband, Trevor Morgan. However, we quickly saw their marriage was horrible as he abused her. The torment soon escalated, with Trevor attacking Little Mo, assaulting her, and humiliating her by making her eat Christmas dinner from the carpet. After Little Mo fought back and struck Trevor with an iron, he got her arrested for attempted murder. Livid fans, not understanding the soap was fictional, took it upon themselves to send Trevor actor Alex Ferns death threats. In 2002, Trevor took his former wife hostage and started a fire, leading to his own poetic demise.

#4: Bethany's Grooming Horror

“Coronation Street” (1960-)

In 2016, tanning salon manager Nathan Curtis rode in like a knight in shining armour to get Bethany Platt medical help after taking too many diet pills. But over the next few months, his far more sinister side began to come out as he took advantage of the teenager, who was over double her age. Nathan ostracised Bethany from her family, grooming her into doing what he wanted, leading to him exploiting her to his friends for money. Things stepped up when Nathan planned to take Bethany abroad to sell her to other men. Thankfully, she realized the situation she was in and contacted the police. Nathan and his crew were found guilty and sentenced to prison.

#3: The Rampage of Meena

“Emmerdale” (1972-)

Brought into “Emmerdale” in 2020 as Manpreet’s younger sister, Meena Jutla quickly excited fans when her manipulative side began to show. But no one expected how far she’d go to get what she wanted. After Leanna Cavanagh discovered that Meena had taken the life of Nadine Butler, Meena pushed the teenager to her demise on her birthday. Meena followed this up by taking Andrea Tate’s life after she witnessed her attempt to drown Victoria. Then, after realising Ben Tucker had seen footage of what happened to Victoria, Meena heartwrenchingly killed him and destroyed the evidence. In her short stint in the Dales, Meena showed what true villainy was before she was sentenced to life for her crimes.

#2: The Saga of Richard Hillman

“Coronation Street” (1960-)

Gail Platt hasn’t always had it easy when it comes to relationships in “Coronation Street.” But none have been as disastrous as Richard Hillman. After first convincing everyone he was a good egg, his true evil began to leak out. First, Richard allowed Duggie Ferguson to perish after falling. Then, he fatally struck his ex-wife, Patricia, before his desperation for cash consumed him. After trying to persuade Audrey she had Alzheimer's, Richard then tried to kill Emily Bishop for money, only for Maxine Peacock to arrive, leading to him taking her life. While Richard confessed to Gail and left, he returned, tied up the Platt family in a car, and drove into the canal. However, while the Platts survived, Richard didn’t.

#1: The Kidnap and Double Murder

“Coronation Street” (1960-)

Pat Phelan did a lot of bad things during his time in “Coronation Street.” He took lives, screwed over people for money, framed others for crimes, and so much more. But none is more despicable than what he did to Andy Carver. In 2017, after Andy finds out about Pat’s crimes, he is seemingly ended by Pat with a laptop. However, he actually kept Andy hostage in the cellar of an abandoned property for months in terrible conditions, breaking him psychologically. Then, Pat grabs Vinny Ashford for revenge. He tells Andy that he has to shoot Vinny to get his freedom. Reluctantly, Andy does just that. Yet, after he points the firearm at Pat, who grabs it back, he takes Andy’s life, too.
