Top 10 Recent Cancellations That Deserved It

#10: Blockbuster (2022)
Its hard not to feel like this show was doomed from the start. After all, a sitcom about Blockbuster releasing on the very streaming service that helped bankrupt it? No matter how you cut it, those optics arent very good. Sadly, neither is the show. Blockbuster has a really solid cast, and not a lot of solid jokes to go with them. In the end, the show only lasted a single, ten-episode season, and thats probably for the best. If anything, the fact that Netflix killed Blockbuster twice is a funnier joke than anything in the actual show.
#9: Hoops (2020)
Crass, crude, and cringe-inducing, Hoops sees Netflix aim for a three-pointer, and miss. Spectacularly. Following a foul-mouthed basketball coach attempting to fix both his team and his marriage, the show imitates seemingly every great adult sitcom of the era. And yet, Hoops fundamentally misses why any of those shows work in the first place. It reduces every punchline to the lowest common denominator. So, unless youre into gross-out gags and a never-ending stream of ball jokes, Hoops isnt for you. Critics hated it, viewers rejected it, and even Netflix themselves agreed, putting the series out of its misery after just one season.
#8: Pretty Smart (2021)
You dont have to be top-of-your-class to realize why this show only lasted ten episodes. Although, Chelsea may disagree. Shes a Harvard grad who moves in with her sister and her posse of dumb, self-absorbed friends. Thats it, thats literally the whole shtick. Chelsea is an unlikeable stick-in-the-mud whose holier-than-thou jokes grow stale in record time. And dont even get us started on Pretty Smarts hamfisted attempts at commentary. The show isnt clever, funny, or endearing. Its just eye-rolling. In fact, wed go as far as saying the only smart thing involving it was when it got cancelled.
#7: Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Let this be a cautionary tale; not every anime needs a live-action remake. While leading man John Cho has a clear reverence for the source material, this big-budget spin on Cowboy Bebop gets lost in its own style. The soulless callbacks and nonsensical story changes failed to attract new or old fans. It left the series without a foot to stand on when the time came for Netflix to decide its fate. While ten, disappointing episodes would be a sad end for most shows, in this case, its just yet another reason to watch the original instead. Its way better. And, you know, has an actual ending.
#6: Fate: The Winx Saga (2021-22)
Once again, Netflix cashes in on a beloved animated property with a doll-drum and gritty live-action interpretation Wait, is there an echo in here? If it wasnt obvious, fans of Winx Club actively rejected this show, and for good reason. Gone is the whimsy. Gone is the color. Gone is Tecna, one of the original main characters! Transforming Winx into a generic, teen fantasy show is such a disservice to the series and everything it stands for. Netflix pulled the plug after two, ill-advised seasons, but quite frankly, its amazing Fate even got greenlit in the first place.
#5: Suits LA (2025)
In its move to Los Angeles, Suits brought way too much baggage for a network drama to handle. Is it a nostalgia play? A fresh spin on the formula? A mix of both? Whatever it is, it failed, with the tired storylines failing to impress anyone. To put it into perspective, the show premiered in February 2025, and three short months later in May, it was already on the years list of early cancellations. What else did they expect, though? It had the Suits name. But without the quality to back it up, this LA-based spinoff was destined to be forgotten.
#4: Halo (2022-24)
At a time when video-game adaptions were becoming a new staple for Hollywood, Paramount+ rolled the dice on one of gamings biggest franchises and somehow fumbled. If this show wasnt named Halo, itd be almost unrecognizable from the iconic shooter series. Sure, theres Master Chief and a few other fun easter eggs, but the story and tone are a complete departure from what diehards wanted from a Halo show. By season two, it had veered so far off course, there was no one left to mourn its quiet cancellation. Maybe, one day, Halo fans will get the adaptation they deserve.
#3: Insatiable (2018-19)
Its genuinely impressive for a show to stir up so much controversy before it even debuts. As early as its reveal trailer, people found Insatiables portrayal of plus-sized women to be shallow at best, and downright offensive at worst. The word fatphobic followed it all through its run, and while the publicity earned it a season two renewal, thats as long as Patty lasted on the pageant stage. By that point, most people were only hate-watching, anyway. So, when news of Insatiables end finally broke, the prevailing reaction wasnt outrage or sadness or even indifference. It was good riddance.
#2: Velma (2023-24)
No need to call Mystery Incorporated, this is an open-and-shut case! Turns out, the real culprit of Velmas failure is, well, Velma herself! Shes an obnoxious, preachy version of her former self, and as the title character, thats symptomatic of the whole series. While Velma was definitely the victim of some unfortunate, hateful dogpiling, its hard to defend a show that mischaracterized a cast as iconic as the Scooby Gang. Max had the right idea ending Velma after two seasons. It wasnt a good enough show to warrant all the hubbub. Plus, it had already besmirched poor Velma Dinkleys name enough.
#1: The Idol (2023)
This Idol is all glitter and no substance. No, we dont mean Jocelyn. Were talking about the show as a whole. It tries to be a provocative and edgy examination of the entertainment industry. But, all it does is come off as gross, exploitative, and over-the-top. The worst part? The Idol struts around like its some prestigious drama, which makes the whole thing fall flat on its face. Upon release, the show became one of HBOs worst reviewed programs, ever. If theres any justice in Hollywood, its that The Idol never made it past its horrible first season.
