Top 10 Times Kristen Wiig Broke People on SNL
#10: “Weekend Update: Garth and Kat Sing Halloween Songs”
Coming together as a hilarious duo, Garth and Kat are two unprepared singers. Their act brings joy and confusion to “Weekend Update” with several songs about Halloween. It’s clear that there’s a degree of improvisation involved here that makes it even more difficult to perform. This is apparent from the very first song because Fred Armisen can’t maintain his composure from the start. Kristen Wiig tries to keep up with her scene partner as he crumbles. After trying to sing about Dracula, the group set up for another performance that proves to be equally silly. It speaks to the power of Wiig that she can hang in there while Armisen loses it.
#9: “Herb Welch: Falling Ice”
With Bill Hader playing this recurring character, this sketch starts off strong with some wacky interviews. The ornery Herb Welch later talks to Kristen Wiig’s co-op president in a tense standoff. Welch’s rude comments lead up to an outrageous line of questioning that includes hitting her with a microphone. Wiig holds steady through the contact, but Hader has to hide his giggles from the camera. The latter has to compete with the former’s deadpan expression that doesn’t waver for a second. In what might be the best version of this recurring skit, the actress makes a huge impact as one of the most combative interviewees ever.
#8: “Weekend Update: Paula Deen on the Lawsuit Against Her”
Always willing to try out an over-the-top character, Kristen Wiig turns this Paula Deen impression into a hilarious comic presence. The celebrity chef appears on “Weekend Update” to address serious allegations, but she does it with a chicken leg and a stick of butter. Getting a front-row seat to some peak comedy, Seth Meyers tries to keep it together through Wiig’s ridiculous interpretation and wonderful vocal stylings. Meyers struggles through his lines after watching his co-star use the butter stick on the chicken. Disappearing into the absurdity of the character, the actress loses herself in the moment and entertains her scene partner in the process.
#7: “Weekend Update: Tamara Parks on P.G.A.D.”
Hoping to talk about the struggles of Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder, this character tries to tell her story about fighting the condition. Tamara Parks claims to be past it before proving everybody wrong. Her reactions and facial expressions make for some truly funny moments, with even Seth Meyers having to cover his mouth. Wiig’s performance is so subtle and hilarious that the “Weekend Update” host has to laugh along with the audience. The Parks character has a mix of awkwardness and tragedy that’s a signature of the performer’s time on the show. With that in mind, it’s easy to see that it could break up the likes of another comedy master.
#6: “Weekend Update: Rebecca Larue the Flirting Expert”
While she’s on “Weekend Update” to talk about romance, this Kristen Wiig character seems more interested in wooing the host. Rebecca Larue says that she’s a flirting expert, but all of her methods seem to miss the mark. She likes to throw herself around and make loud movements in her pursuit of relationships. These continue to make Seth Meyers uncomfortable until they reach a boiling point, including a moment with her legs in the air. Wiig’s co-star has to deal with her getting up close and personal in a hilarious dose of physical comedy. The lead performer doesn’t even need words to crack up Meyers, taking him down with her aggressive advances.
#5: “Hollywood Dish with Scarlett Johansson”
Alongside Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig plays an excited journalist interviewing Scarlett Johansson. The TV personalities are broad parodies of interviewers that play up their reactions to every answer. This includes one moment where Hader does a spit take directly at Wiig, later emptying the entire cup onto his co-star. The sight of red slushie all over her makes both of her scene partners crack up. It’s even harder for Hader, waiting for his co-presenter to say her next line. Due to her laughing and having blocked vision, Wiig takes an extended pause before finishing off her lines. Johansson luckily gets to be off camera for this moment, likely chuckling to herself as she watches everything unfold.
#4: “Weekend Update: Garth and Kat Sing Christmas Songs (Dress Rehearsal)”
There’s no better way to celebrate the holiday season than with some seasonal songs. Thankfully, Garth and Kat have some new ones to dish out for audiences. In this sketch, they pretend to have everything written and clearly lie about it. Fred Armisen tries to take the lead and dive bombs within seconds of the first track. This creates a back-and-forth between him and Kristen Wiig, turning the “Weekend Update” segment into a rollercoaster ride. Wiig starts to laugh, helping to keep her co-star chuckling throughout. The second song doesn’t fare much better, but even Seth Meyers feels inspired to join in with them.
#3: “Whiskers R We with Kristen Wiig”
With another comedy powerhouse like Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig shines even brighter in this entertaining sketch with cats. The pair are offering up felines for adoption and letting the audience in on their apparent love life. Wiig’s character gets so handsy at one point that she manages to break McKinnon. There are also lots of animals in this scene, making for additional chaos. The lead performer is ultimately no match for her co-star’s absurd behavior and constant attention. These two legends are so deep into character that still manage to finish the skit without letting laughter or furry creatures stop them.
#2: “The Californians: Karina Returns”
If you’re an “SNL” fan, you know that “The Californians” can be full of wild surprises. There’s also a chance that one or more cast members will break in the sketch. This scene is no different, featuring Kristen Wiig’s Karina attempting a disguise. Once Fred Armisen joins Wiig and Bill Hader in the mayhem, it’s only a matter of seconds before they fall apart. Wiig also has to do it all with a fake mustache that makes it harder for her co-stars to stay in character. After a certain point, the actress keeps the laughs coming in a silly performance. Add in some outlandish reactions and you’ve got one of the funniest versions of this skit.
#1: “Super Showcase Spokesmodels”
What do you get when you put Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig in a sketch together? If you’re talking about “Super Showcase Spokesmodels,” you get one of the funniest skits of their careers. The pair try to show off the prizes, but the entire presentation quickly turns into a disaster. Wiig’s pronunciations and accents are enough to send her and her co-stars into laughing fits. In between chickens and clocks, Rudolph and even Bill Hader try to hold it together. There’s also a golf cart stunt that takes out part of the set. It’s a hilarious scene from start to finish, easily tripping up some of the best performers in the show’s history.
