From sea to shining sea, the whole of the United States, along with the rest of the world is being taken back by nature. Watch out for the parasitic fungus that thrives out among the greens, as inhaling it will probably cause you to zombify – that is of course, if you can avoid those who have already suffered this fate. Also, if you are lucky to make it to one of the few safe zones, be prepared to watch your rights disappear. Police states at their finest.

Ironic that a game built around the fact that you will probably die again and again is set in world where death holds no comfort. If you find yourself in Lordran, chances are you’re undead, a hollow shell of your former self. As if being dead wasn’t bad enough, the only way to regain your humanity is to go toe to toe with the hundreds of horrific monsters in Lordran that all want to make sure you stay as dead as possible. That is, if you can escape the Asylum they’ll probably lock you up in, since being Undead drives most people insane.

This industrial metropolis is the center of our Dishonored world. Being home to a large whaling community as well as the Imperial throne, you can bet life here would be quite interesting. Although there are certainly nice corners of Dunwall, under a totalitarian rule from the imperial family, Dunwall has seen its fair share of troubles. The locals a bad, the police are worse, and the rats will straight up eat you.

Raccoon City was just a small-industrialized town in the United States Midwest, until the Umbrella Corporation set up shop. Baring the troubles of inner city life, things really took a turn for the apocalypse after Umbrella inadvertently caused an outbreak of the T-Virus in 1998, turning most Raccoonites into the walking dead. Even if the zombies or other unimaginable horrors don’t get you, chances are the Umbrella corporation is going to try cover up their little mistake in a big way.

There is no worse feeling than that of being hunted. That feeling is only made worse in Space, as any visitor of Sevastopol will tell you. Originally it was a thriving center of interstellar discovery, that is until, stop me if you’ve heard this one, an alien egg was brought on board. By the time you get there, a fully grown Xenomorph has torn the place to bits and is now stalking your every move. At least the station’s friendly androids are there to help you. Or not.

A beautiful world spanning the rolling greens of the Blood Moor to the snow capped peaks of Mount Arreat, Sanctuary would probably be a great place to live if the end of the world didn’t happen so frequently. Unfortunately, if you’ve live in a little hamlet, next to a church or god forbid, close to graveyard, your chances of being turned into a skeleton or being hacked apart by demons is unfortunately pretty high. At least you have a huge selection of environments to die in. But die you probably will.

#4: City 17 “Half Life 2” (2004)

Oh, how the mighty cities of the world have fallen. What was presumably once a prosperous European city in the past, City 17 - as it was renamed - was taken over by the oppressive Combine during the Seven Hour War. The remaining depressed citizens abide by the Combine's twisted sense of order, with the ever-looming threat that is the Citadel always watching. If Orwell’s 1984 read like a travel brochure to you, consider City 17 for your next visit.

Now it’s time for one of the most iconic horror towns in video game history. Another entry located in the United States, this time in Maine, Silent Hill used to be a small town with thriving agriculture and tourism industries. As if often the case though, once the doomsday cult moved in, everything changed. A mysterious mist covers the entire town, masking all of the obscenities that occur within its limits. Child sacrifices, horrific murders, sadistic rituals are all commonplace here. Good luck escaping.

Alien invasions are always bad, but what about enemies that emerge from within your own planet? Sera was once a powerful world much like Earth: they even had a flammable natural resource to fight over just like us! As if perpetual war with the rest of humanity wasn’t enough fun, soon the ground opened up out popped an army of creatures bent on taking back the surface. Or sinking it to their level. What is worse than a zombie apocalypse? Complete nuclear annihilation. Don’t worry, the wasteland has zombies too – something for everyone! It may have been a hundred years since the bombs dropped, but time has not been kind to the world outside the vaults. Mutated monsters? Check. Blood-thirsty bandits? Check. Million ways to die?
