Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 20 Scariest Art the Clown Moments. For this list, we’ll be picking out this hilariously terrifying clown’s most frightening moments across his movie appearances. If you haven’t seen the first two “Terrifier” movies or the anthology film “All Hallows’ Eve,” there will be spoilers. Which moment scared you the most? Shriek about it down in the comments!

#20: The Interview

“Terrifier” (2016)

In the opening scene of “Terrifier,” a journalist is interviewing one of Art the Clown’s victims on a talk show. The woman’s encounter with Art resulted in her face being maimed to the point where it’s hard for her to go out in public. The scene is unsettling, as the viewer is watching this interview through a small TV with grainy reception in a strange room until a foot wearing what looks to be an oversized clown shoe kicks in the TV for an effective jumpscare. In addition to feeling sorry for the woman, all we need is a shot of the viewer putting on a possible clown costume to start sending shivers down our spine.

#19: Laundromat Scene

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

After the grisly first kill sets the tone for this horror sequel, Art does what any ordinary citizen would do when their attire is drenched in blood: visit the local laundromat. Okay, strike the “ordinary” part, but the image of Art laughing at the “funny” pages to pass the time only endears us to him more. In a gross, sickly kind of way. Throwing us for a loop, Art is then greeted by a Little Pale Girl who looks like she just graduated from his clown college. The laundromat’s sole other patron can only look on in confusion as Art seemingly plays a bloody game of pattycake with himself. Cut to Art zipping up his clean costume, and it’s revealed he’s brutally murdered the man.

#18: Coroner Scene

“Terrifier” (2016)

Forget cops; being a coroner in a slasher movie is practically a death sentence. Following in the footsteps of killers like Michael Myers, Art is seemingly killed at the end of the first “Terrifier” movie, though, granted, by his own hand. Perhaps this was a tactical decision, knowing he’d just be sent to the morgue where he can wreak another round of bloody mayhem. Halloween never failing to disappoint, the coroner is greeted with two corpses, one of which is Art the Clown’s. Only the coroner doesn’t realize he’s in a horror movie, that is, until the lights start flickering and the electronics go haywire. Naturally, Art is next to spring to life, strangling the coroner to cap off a successful night of killing.

#17: Just the Tip

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

Yes, the entry title is as lewd as it sounds, but such is Jeff’s obvious brand of humor. Brooke’s boyfriend with a last-minute Halloween costume - if you can even call it that - Jeff has his demise pretty much spelled out the minute we meet him. After Jeff and Brooke drive Sienna to an abandoned carnival in search of her little brother Jonathan, the couple hangs back only to be terrorized by Art. After Jeff exits the car to relieve himself, Brooke sees an appropriate message written on the car window. She then cranes her head around only to watch Art take a lot more than what he promised. The scene is as gory as it is morbidly sardonic, two things that epitomize Art the Clown.

#16: Art Coming for the Babysitter

“All Hallows’ Eve” (2013)

An anthology film, “All Hallows’ Eve” is a collection of three short films, and Art the Clown makes an appearance in all three. For the main story, a babysitter named Sarah comes across a videotape containing the film segments that was found in a kid’s trick-or-treat bag. After Sarah makes the mistake of watching the contents of the videotape all the way through, Art the Clown turns his attention toward her and tries to break through to the other side in order to reach her. Art comes dangerously close behind Sarah, but fortunately, she’s able to make him go away by breaking the tape. Or is she?

#15: Costume Store

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

One of the wrinkles of “Terrifier 2” is the public’s fascination with Art the Clown in the wake of his previous murder spree, with some even going so far as to dress up as him for Halloween. So when Allie and Sienna come across the real Art the Clown in a costume store, they hardly bat an eye - okay maybe one eye. Art makes sure the two girls are thoroughly creeped out, especially Sienna, getting way too close for comfort as she waits at the counter. While Art isn’t ready to kill Sienna just yet, he makes sure all the buildup isn’t for nothing, as he then goes to town on the cashier. Seriously, this scene proves that Art can brutalize someone with whatever’s nearby.

#14: A Mother’s Touch

“Terrifier” (2016)

In this scene, a mentally ill woman has lost her doll, which she believes to be her baby. Frantically searching for the doll, she finds Art the Clown sitting on the floor, holding the doll. The woman - credited as Cat Lady - pleads with Art to give her back her baby, trying to appeal to Art’s sense of compassion, asking if he’s ever felt a “mother’s touch.” Surprisingly, her method appears to work, as Art gives back the doll and regresses to a childlike state where he sucks his thumb. But we know this won’t end well for the woman...

#13: Born Again

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

“Terrifier 2” really hammered home the notion that Art is not your average serial killer. After he’s seemingly killed - again - Art’s head is taken away by the Little Pale Girl, who ostensibly doesn’t exist. A mid-credits scene then cuts to a psychiatric hospital, where we catch up with Vicky from the previous film, who is… not doing so well. A couple nurses have a seemingly normal conversation out in the hall, while Vicky writes some colorful language on the wall in… well, we think you know exactly the kind of red paint she’s using. Vicky then goes into a grisly labor, only for a nurse to discover she’s given birth to… well, Art. Cryptic and horrific, this is the perfect way to end the movie.

#12: Waiting for a Train

“All Hallows’ Eve” (2013)

This scene from the first segment of “All Hallows’ Eve” marks the first time we see Art interact with someone. A young woman named Casey is sitting alone at a train station when she comes across Art the Clown. As expected, Art is less than considerate, annoying Casey by honking a loud horn and giving her a flower that contains roaches. Eventually, Art grabs Casey and injects her with a syringe that causes her to lose consciousness. Before passing out, she witnesses Art’s glowing eyes, which are a window into Art’s demonic nature.

#11: Sienna Fights Art

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

All legendary slasher villains need a final girl, and Art the Clown couldn’t have asked for a better one than Sienna Shaw. Dressed as a sort of angelic warrior lifted from her father’s drawings, Sienna certainly looks the part for her epic battle with evil. Over the course of the night, she comes to learn that her father had some kind of psychic connection to the clown, much like she does now. Perhaps the only one who can truly kill Art, Sienna tracks her brother Jonathan to the carnival and saves him from a gruesome fate, but not before being put through the wringer herself. Just when it seems Sienna is done for, her nascent powers reawaken before she gives Art something to scream about.

#10: End Credits

“All Hallows’ Eve” (2013)

During the closing credits of “All Hallows’ Eve,” the scene cuts to the boiler room where Art first tried to break out of the TV set. Art appears again, moving toward the screen, while discordant music plays in the background. This suggests Art the Clown is going to break into the real world and terrorize the viewer personally, just like he intended to do with the poor babysitter. The next time you go to sleep, close your eyes and replay this scene in your head. Sweet dreams.

#9: Pizzeria

“Terrifier” (2016)

While the two main characters, Dawn and Tara, wait for an order at the pizza shop, Art walks in, making everyone in the restaurant uncomfortable. He sits across the room from the two girls, staring at Tara, who is clearly an object of his affection, and flirts with her by proposing to her with a plastic ring he bought from the restaurant’s toy machine. Tara is made uneasy because she sees the danger that Art potentially poses, while her friend looks like she’s clueless, making things worse by provoking the sinister clown.

#8: Do You Know Where Your Children Are?

“All Hallows’ Eve” (2013)

While Sarah is watching the videotape in “All Hallows’ Eve,” she is babysitting two children, whom she’s sent to bed because the first short proved to be too inappropriate for them. After she demolishes the videotape and keeps Art from breaking out to reach her, she hears a scream upstairs. When she goes up to see what’s going on, she finds Art, covered in blood, waiting for her in the hallway. Her worst fears are confirmed when she goes into the bedroom and discovers that Art has killed both children.

#7: Brooke’s Death

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

The obligatory “bad friend” to the lead protagonist, Brooke just wants to make sure Sienna has a good time, though the way she goes about it is definitely reprehensible. Beyond saving by horror movie rules, Brooke flees into the haunted house after Jeff is mutilated, but the fact that the attraction is called “The Terrifier” should’ve been her first indication that she wouldn’t be making it out. Cornered and injured in a bathroom, Brooke does her best to arm herself. It seems like Art’s gonna take her out with a club; he does, but not before dousing her face in scalding acid. While all of Art’s kills are deliciously bloody, he still manages to surprise every time.

#6: Putting on a “Wig”

“Terrifier” (2016)

Oftentimes, Art doesn’t need to resort to brutal violence to be scary. Usually, his facial expressions and mannerisms are all that’s needed to chill to the bone. After the Cat Lady tries and fails to assuage Art, he repays her kindness by taking a little piece of her with him. Tara then comes across the pair, finding the Cat Lady severely mutilated and Art wearing the top of her head and… front parts. While Art is merely delighting in the performative aspect of it all, Tara and the audience are both revolting in abject terror. Tara tries hiding in a closet, but Art knows exactly where to find her, taking his time to relish the moment.

#5: The Ending of the Third Segment

“All Hallows’ Eve” (2013)

Throughout the third segment of “All Hallows’ Eve,” Art chases a young costume designer who is out on the road late at night. Eventually, he catches up with the woman by causing a car crash that knocks her unconscious. When the costume designer wakes up, she finds herself in a strange room laid up on a table, next to Art, who’s pointing and laughing at her. While she was unconscious, Art mutilated her body. This torture at the hands of Art the Clown undoubtedly makes the unfortunate woman wish he’d killed her earlier on the road.

#4: Clown Café

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

This scene may not be really happening - maybe - but that doesn’t make it any less revolting. In her first interaction with the killer clown, Sienna finds herself in a nightmare wherein she’s on the set of a disturbing kids show. From the adult actors in kids costumes to an annoyingly catchy song to the worst sponsored cereal of all time, the scene already makes us unnerved even before Art shows up. When he does, he makes sure this episode could never air on any kids station - or any of them for that matter. He whips out a Tommy Gun and takes to decimating nearly everyone on set. As if that wasn’t brutal enough, he then torches the show host alive, though she hardly notices.

#3: Selfie

“Terrifier” (2016)

During the scene at the pizzeria, one of the ways Dawn pestered Art was by sitting on his lap and taking a selfie with him while he gave a deathly glare. This turns out to be a big mistake on Dawn’s part as Art was not in the mood for this playful interaction. Later on in the movie, after he kills Dawn in a memorably brutal way, Art decides to repay Dawn’s previous action by taking a selfie with her dead body.

#2: Saw

“Terrifier” (2016)

In this infamous scene, Art has tied up Tara in a chair and gagged her mouth. Then, he pulls a curtain to reveal that he has kidnapped her friend, Dawn, and has been hanging her upside down for an unknown period of time. Art then begins to slowly hack away at Dawn, who is unable to scream about what’s happening to her because she too is being gagged. Tara has no choice but to watch as her friend is being killed right in front of her. The scene is so intense and graphic that we obviously can’t show it here.

#1: Allie’s Bedroom

“Terrifier 2” (2022)

It seemed like Art could never top Dawn’s death in terms of grisliness; then came the sequel. Though the pandemic impacted plenty of filmmakers, it also gave director Damien Leone and company time to flesh out Allie’s death even more - emphasis on the word “flesh.” Art breaks into Allie’s house, chasing her down and cornering her in her bedroom. Just when you think Allie can’t take any more, Art finds another horrifically brutal way to punish her. To make matters worse, Allie’s mother walks in to find her daughter somehow still alive. While we can’t show the grisly details, we encourage you to check it out for yourself to marvel at the practical effects mastery on display. If you can stomach it, of course.
