#5: “Early Man” (2018)
This animation, by the creators of “Wallace and Gromit”, is fairly well known. But it’s all too often forgotten that Eddie Redmayne was the voice behind Dug, the Stone Age caveman and protagonist of the story. Since Redmayne is known more for his live action performances, this unexpected bit of voiceover work definitely felt worth mentioning. With all the fun happening on screen, it’s easy to take for granted what went on behind the scenes to get it there. Especially when you’ve got a high stakes prehistoric football match to distract you!
#4: “Hick” (2011)
This American drama stars many a familiar face, including Chloë Grace Moretz, Blake Lively and even Alec Baldwin. But, don’t worry… Despite its big name billing, it flew under the radar and was missed by many. In this film, a teenager, played by Moretz, decides to hit the road for the dizzy heights of Las Vegas. On her way, she encounters Eddie, played by Redmayne, who is a rebel with alarming motives. This character is unstable, intimidating and very unlike any other role we had seen Redmayne play before. Give it a watch for yourself… we guarantee that it’ll catch you off-guard.
#3: “My Week with Marilyn” (2011)
It’s possible that you’d forget Eddie Redmayne is even in this film. Honestly, upon the first viewing, we were far too distracted by how similar Michelle Williams looks to the real Marilyn Monroe to catch much of anything else. But Redmayne shouldn’t be overlooked. Here he stars as Colin Clark; a man Monroe employs to escort her around London after her husband returns to America. Redmayne’s role is based on a real person, and he does the character justice. For fans of Monroe, Redmayne or just good cinema… this is a must-watch.
#2: “The Yellow Handkerchief” (2008)
This 2008 film is an independent drama about an ex-convict who embarks on a road trip as soon as he’s let out of prison. Alongside Kristen Stewart, Redmayne plays Gordy, a fresh-faced but troubled teenager. Eddie ditches the British accent here and surprises us all with a strong Southern American twang. Despite not hearing much by way of mainstream coverage about this film, Redmayne’s work is top drawer. Gordy is desperate for acceptance and as a result, the actor’s portrayal of his character’s vulnerability shines through brilliantly.
#1: “Savage Grace” (2007)
Taking us to the top of our list today is a film that paired Redmayne with the brilliant Julianne Moore. However, if you’re searching for a light-hearted production and an ‘easy watch’, this one isn’t for you – that’s for sure. Here, Redmayne plays Antony, a socialite couple’s only child. The story follows their lives as greed, decadence and family dynamics take over. Redmayne looks like the fresh-faced actor we know him best as, and his performance is without a doubt one of the film’s highlights. All in all, Remayne’s role in “Savage Grace” is seriously good.
