Can You Handle This Much Awesomeness?!
When you think of all-time classics that came out in the heyday of arcade machines and the NES, Contra should certainly be near the top of the list. It was ridiculously challenging, wholeheartedly thrilling and packed with such machismo that it set the new standard all future forms of manliness in video games.
It’s kind of fascinating that its taken someone thing long to suggest doing a movie about it.
According to an article on Anime News Network –
Konami‘s Contra video game series is inspiring a live-action film and television series. The Beijing-based company Starlight is producing the film and series, and production is underway in China.
The original Contra action arcade game debuted in 1987, and it received various ports for the Nintendo Entertainment System, NintendoDS, and PC. Hamster released the game for PlayStation 4 as part of its Arcade Archives series in 2016.
The Super Contra sequel arcade game debuted in 1988, and the series includes many other sequels and ports. The Contra III: The Alien Warsgame, which originally shipped for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992, shipped as a game on the SNES Classic Edition console in North America on September 29. The console shipped in Australia on September 30 and in Japan on October 5.
Its hard to say exactly what we’re going to get from a film/series such as this. We won’t totally push aside the fact that its a Beijing production, heck they might be able to do more with the source material in terms of sheer spectacle than anything Michael Bay can pull off. However, they’ve also chosen to adapt a game that’s famous for some rather…ludicrous level designs.
We have no idea how they’re going to transfer some of these bosses to the big screen, but we’ll be damned if we aren’t giddy to see if they can pull it off!
