THE LAST TRAILER?
Fans obsessively scanning trailers for any info about The Last Jedi’s plot and characters have a little more ammo now that a new international trailer has dropped, which adds a wee bit more context to voraciously curious viewers. And even a bit of new footage.
Every little bit helps, right?
WE DID IT ALL FOR THE WOOKIE
Just a little more, but more nonetheless.
There are two types of fans when it comes to big blockbusters like Star Wars: go in with zero concept of any trailer or TV spot, or watch all the promotional stuff and turn over every theory in your head until opening day. For those in the second category, Lucasfilm has dropped a new Japanese trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and while it’s still extremely mysterious, there are some worthy nuggets in there.Â
We’ve seen quite a bit of the footage before when the first official full-length trailer dropped three weeks ago, but the Japanese trailer for The Last Jedi is far more streamlined to focus on Rey (Daisy Ridley), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). “Something inside me has always been there. But now it’s awake. I need help,†Rey says to Luke. The footage still directly juxtaposes Rey and Kylo as Luke warily acknowledges that he’s “seen this raw strength only once before,†which has been a consistent parallel throughout the entire promotional campaign of The Last Jedi so far. However, the first half of the Japanese trailer lacks any distraction from that theme. The trailer transitions cleanly from Rey to Luke to Kylo before introducing Leia (Carrie Fisher) and the rest of the characters into the fold (including a clip of C-3P0!) and reminding us that yes, this is Star Wars. The Last Jedi is still going to an extraordinary spectacle.
PUT YA SABERS UP
. . . Sure, trailers will be cut to intentionally mislead and keep plotlines under wraps (that last Rey and Kylo shot is still highly suspicious to me). But from poster art to various trailers thus far, the same three characters are placed front and center in an extraordinary quest of identity, destiny, and family. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will open in theaters on December 15th.
