Beauty Comes In Many, Many Forms
Aside from its outrageous and adorable comedy, Princess Jellyfish above all else is a story about acceptance. Accepting what makes you happy, accepting that others may not understand, and accepting that you should pursue said happiness regardless of how the world views you. With so much heart behind it as well as a likeable cast of eccentric characters, its no wonder that Japan has decided to turn it into a live-action series!
According to an article on Anime News Network –
A live-action television series adaptation of Akiko Higashimura‘s Princess Jellyfish manga has been green-lit. The series will premiere in January on Fuji TV, and will air on Mondays at 9:00 p.m.
KyÅko Yoshine will play protagonist Tsukimi Kurashita. Jun’ichi Ishikawa is directing the show, and YÅ«ichi Tokunaga is penning the script.
Kodansha Comics describes the original manga’s story:
Tsukimi, who has loved jellyfish from a young age, resides in Amamizukan, a fangirl-only dorm. One evening at the local pet store, Tsukimi sees a lovely jellyfish in danger, but a beautiful woman comes to the rescue. They go back to Amamizukan together, but this “woman”… is actually a man!
Higashimura launched the series in Kiss in 2008, and ended it on August 25. Kodansha published the manga’s 16th compiled book volume in May 2016, and will publish the 17th and final volume on November 13. Crunchyroll publishes the manga in English on its online platform, and Kodansha Comicsdebuted the series in English in print in February 2016. The manga inspired a 2010 television anime series that Funimation released in North America and a 2014 live-action film. The manga was nominated for an Eisner Award this year.
Who knows if a live-action version will be able to match the anime’s comedy, but thanks to the abundance of LGBT elements littered throughout, we’re sure many newcomers will find something of value in checking it out!
