The 2018 Golden Globe Nominations were announced today. Guillermo del Toroâs fantasy drama The Shape of Water dominated the film categories with 7 nominations, while Big Little Lies picked up the most TV nominations with a total of 6 nods. While most of the nominees were quite predictable, (Lady Bird and The Post were obvious choices) there are some surprising additions (and omissions)!
Weâre breaking down the biggest surprises and snubs from this yearâs nominations:
Surprise: All the Money in the World
After director Ridley Scott made the decision to re-cast Kevin Spacey just WEEKS before the movie was slated to be released, many were skeptical whether heâd be able to pull it off in time. Well according to the movieâs 3 Golden Globes nominations, the risky move definitely paid off! Not only did Scott earn a nom for directing, but Christopher Plummer, who took over the role from Spacey, was recognized for his work earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Snub: Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwigâs directorial debut Lady Bird was extremely well-received by audiences and critics alike and even became the best-reviewed movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this wasnât enough to earn Gerwig a nomination for Best Director. Although the film did receive 4 noms including Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) and Best Screenplay, it wouldâve been nice to see her directorial work recognized (especially considering that not a single woman was nominated for the award).
Surprise: SMILF and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
We know what youâre probably thinking: what andâ¦what? Itâs always surprising when relatively unknown quantities are up for huge awards. Considering that award-show favorite Veep failed to get a nod, the inclusion of Showtimeâs SMILF and Amazonâs The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in the Comedy Television Series category is definitely unexpected. The nominations guarantee that we will be hearing a lot more about these shows in the future!
Snub: The Big Sick
The comedy based on the real-life romance between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon didnât receive a single nomination despite being one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year. Kumail, who co-wrote the film with his wife, had an interesting reaction to the news, tweeting as Steven Spielberg to promote the film. Good to see he has a sense of humor about his filmâs lack of nominations!
Hey gang. This is Steven Spielberg tweeting from Kumailâs phone. My fave movie this yr was The Big Sick. Itâs avail on Amazon Prime & iTunes & all that. Great movie to watch w the fam. I watched it w my family (the Spielbergs) & we all loved it. Handing phone back to Kumail now.

Surprise: Katherine Langford
While the Australian actress turned out a great performance on 13 Reasons Why, her nomination is still a surprise considering that the Netflix hit was completely shut out of this yearâs Emmys. The show is still not a best series contender at the Golden Globes, but Langfordâs standout performance was enough to earn her a nod.
Snub: Jordan Peele
Thereâs no question that Get Out was one of the biggest films of the year, earning it a well-deserved nod for Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) as well as a nomination for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya. But why wasnât Jordan Peele nominated for Best Director or Best Screenplay? His work definitely deserved to be recognized, given how innovative, well-crafted and culturally relevant the film has proven itself to be.
The 75th Golden Globe Awards will air on January 7th 2018, hosted by Seth Meyers. You can check out the full list of nominees here.
