While the journey is most certainly the most important part of any video game, we at least expect the endings to live up to the rest of the content. In the case of these ten, their conclusions went well beyond that of disappointment, almost into the realm of betrayal. Whether it fails to wrap up the narrative in a satisfying manner or just simply cuts off without even giving an authentic ending, these games most certainly left players with a bad taste in their mouths by the time the credits rolled.
Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
#10: âOutlastâ (2013)
After facing monsters like Chris Walker, Trager and Bill Hope, our wounded journalist meets a tragic end as he’s shot down by by the armed forces who have finally taken control of Mount Massive Asylum. Yeah he becomes the new Walrider, but that’s hardly a condolence!
#9: âBorderlandsâ (2009)
After exhausting all your bullets to bring down The Destroyer, the only thing you get out of it is a “good job” from Angel. So much for a reward!
#8: âHalo 2â (2004)
Things were just getting good. The Prophets, the Flood, the Halos, we were about to take them all on with the Master Chief leading the charge! So what happens? We get the mother of all cliffhangers, that’s what!
#7: âMass Effect 3â (2012)
They certainly made up for it in the extended cut, but that still doesn’t excuse the original endings from being so basic and underwhelming that it made us question all the time we spent playing through the entire trilogy.
#6: âMonkey Island 2: LeChuckâs Revengeâ (1991)
Turns out there’s no heroic ending for Guybrush, no grand battle to send LeChuck to the underworld. Nope, it was all a fantasy dreamed up by a couple of kids. Say goodbye to that hope of becoming a swashbuckling legend!
#5: âGhosts ân Goblinsâ (1985)
Talk about punishment. If you don’t complete the game on the hardest difficulty, Satan will literally tell you the whole thing has been an illusion and to start over again!
#4: âStar Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lordsâ (2004)
Nothing was going to measure up to the first’s game masterful reveal of Darth Revan’s return, but they could have done something, anything, better than a long bout of exposition! EA really screwed the pooch on this one.
#3: âMetal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Libertyâ (2001)
Now that we have all played the sequels, we now know that the ending to the second game is just a teaser for things to come. But back when it first came out? It was as confusing as all hell!
#2: âSniper: Ghost Warriorâ (2010)
It ends. It just…ends. You pull the trigger, you snipe down one last guy, and what happens? Everything cuts to black. They didn’t even make an attempt here!
#1: âNo Manâs Skyâ (2016)
So many broken promises, and standing at the top of it all is the reveal that after finally reaching the centre of the galaxy, you find absolutely nothing!
