Boro The Caterpillar: Hayao Miyazaki To Debut New Anime Short!

A Taste Of What’s To Come?

It’s been a long while since the world has experienced the beauty of a Miyazaki film. What he and Studio Ghibli have managed to bring to the medium has not only captured the hearts and imaginations of die-hard anime fans but also moviegoers in general. Even when his works don’t exactly manage to measure up to previous accomplishments, they still grab us by the throat and make us reflect. There will only ever be one Spirited Away, but The Wind Rises is nonetheless compelling in its own way.

As a result, the announcement that he will soon be debuting a fourteen minute animated short is still cause enough for us to lose our heads in excitement!

According to an article on Anime News Network

The official website of the Ghibli Museum announced on Tuesday that Hayao Miyazaki‘s “Kemushi no Boro” (Boro the Caterpillar) CG short is now slated to debut at the museum on March 21. It is the first work Miyazaki has directed since 2013’s The Wind Rises feature.

Miyazaki conceived, wrote, and directed the short, which has a run time of 14 minutes and 20 seconds. The short centers around a recently hatched caterpillar named Boro as he awakens with fresh eyes and takes his first steps into a world filled with friends and enemies.

Miyazaki is also working on the Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (How Do You Live?) feature film, whose title is derived from writer Genzaburō Yoshino’s 1937 masterpiece of the same name. Miyazaki expects it will take three to four years to complete the film. Suzuki described the film in November as a hand-drawn “action-adventure fantasy.”

Despite its length, its fair to say that this short should serve as the perfect reintroduction to Miyazaki’s distinct style. After all, it features an adorable creature thrown into a world it can barely comprehend, one bound to be filled with both beauty and danger. The man is in his element here!
