5 Things You Missed at Last Night’s SAG Awards

Missed last night’s SAG Awards? We’ve got you covered! Here’s everything you need to know about the show:

5. Kristen Bell’s Monologue

Last night marked the first time the SAG Awards had a host, with the job falling on “The Good Place” star Kristen Bell. Her opening monologue was equal parts funny and poignant, acknowledging the current climate in Hollywood: “We are living in a watershed moment and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure we are leading the charge with empathy and diligence.” She also took a dig at Melania Trump’s cyber bullying initiative and reminded us that Frozen 2 comes out in 2019!

4. Morgan Freeman’s Awkward Speech

Morgan Freeman was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award last night, and his speech provided the most confusing, and awkward, moment of the night. At the beginning of his speech, he looked out into the crowd and, speaking directly to an unknown spectator, said: “Hey…I’m talking to you. Yeah, hey, Okay, well you just stand out to me, that’s all.” The cameras stayed on Freeman for the entire interjection, leaving viewers befuddled as to who he was addressing, and whether his interjection was meant as a diss for not paying attention to his speech. Luckily, the actor explained his behaviour after the show, clarifying that he was talking to his long-time friend Lily Tomlin: “Yeah. That was Lily Tomlin. She’s a wonder in herself and I’ve always loved her. I see her, I say hello.” Maybe he could’ve waited until AFTER his speech to say hi to his friend?

3. Sterling K. Brown Makes History

It was a big night for NBC’s hit show “This Is Us”, as its cast picked up the award for Ensemble in a Drama Series. Sterling K. Brown was also honoured with the award for Male Actor in a Drama Series, making him the first black actor to win in this category!

2. Gary Oldman Wins Best Actor

This is a win that is surprising to many, considering how little attention the film, The Darkest Hour, in which Oldman plays Winston Churchill, received before awards season. Beating out James Franco, whose sexual assault allegations seem to have killed his chances of winning any more awards for The Disaster Artist, as well as newcomer and audience favourite Timothee Chalamet, Oldman is now officially a shoe-in for the Best Actor Oscar.

1. Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri Dominates

Despite the controversy surrounding it, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri continued its award show sweep. Sam Rockwell took home Male Actor in a Supporting Role, while Frances McDormand picked up the award for Actress in a Leading Role and the entire cast got the award for Cast in a Theatrical Motion Picture. After last night, the film is primed to clean up at this year’s Oscars!
