Logan Gets a Best Adapted Screenplay Nomination

Let’s start out with a nod to all you comic book fans (probably all of you). Superhero movies aren’t usually recognized at the Oscars outside of special effects and the like, but this year, Logan managed to nab a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Wolverine’s last adventure was of course adapted in part from the “Old Man Logan storyline, and was a heartfelt ode to Hugh Jackman’s 17 year career of playing Wolverine. The triumphant send off was a gripping adventure that left otherwise stoic viewers a little teary eyed.

Wonder Woman Not that Wonderful?

Not all comic book movies got the recognition some felt they deserved. Patty Jenkins being left out of the Best Director Category at the Golden Globes was seen as a serious snub, but Wonder Woman failed to gain a single category nomination at the Oscars. As inspiring as the movie may have been, it just wasn’t enough for the Academy.

Directors Shake-Up

Despite getting Golden Globes nominations for directing, industry legends Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg were both not nominated for Best Director Oscars. The Globes garnered criticism with the rather shocking lack of female directors, given the night’s theme, recent feminist movements, and success of movies like “Wonder Woman” and “Lady Bird”. While Guillermo Del Toro, Martin McDonagh, and Christopher Nolan all garnered Oscar nominations, also included Greta Gerwig, a sleeper favorite for the category. The surprise of the category however was Jordan Peele, the extraordinarily talented comedian turned horror film director, turned critical darling. With a list of nominees nearly as diverse as the films they directed, this is the category to watch.

Franco’s Out

After winning the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for his work in the critically Lauded film “The Disaster Artist, many were hoping that James Franco would have potential to take home the ultimate in Golden Movie Statues. In the days that followed his win however, allegations came to light of James Franco’s sexual misconduct. Given the allegations, many felt that it would be improper to nominate him in this time, and the academy agreed. Best Picture Finalists

The Best Picture category nominations were all pretty much what you’d expect. While The Shape of Water leads the list of nominations with a total of 13, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri’s domination at the Sag Awards makes it more than a worthy contender, while Get Out remains the long-shot hopeful for many fans. One notable exception was “I, Tonya”, which garnered three nominations in other categories. Compared to Spielberg’s “The Post”, for which Meryl Streep got a best Actress Nomination, but failed to get nominations in Writing, Directing, this seems odd.
