The release of the MCUâs âBlack Pantherâ on February 16, 2018, was certainly a legendary (and profitable) one for Marvel Comics. The film has already broken several box office records, and continues to climb in revenue and popularity. While we acknowledge there are others, and that more will surely be achieved, here are three records âBlack Pantherâ has already broken so far.
#3: âBlack Pantherâ surpassed Captain America: Civil War as Marvel’s biggest first day film ticket pre-sale
According to Forbes, âBlack Pantherâ surpassed Captain America: Civil War, which previously held the record for the biggest ticket pre-sales in the first 24 hours of any Marvel film. This came as no surprise, as the anticipation and social media presence for the film was extremely high.
#2: âBlack Pantherâ is the biggest solo superhero launch of all time:
Black Panther surpassed the record held by âIron Man 3â, according to Forbes, which garnered $174 million in its opening weekend. âBlack Pantherâ topped that with a whopping $235 million, according to Variety. âBlack Pantherâ just keeps shattering records across the board.
#1: The film is the biggest-grossing movie directed by a black filmmaker in North America
Perhaps the most significant accolade of all, âBlack Pantherâ set a record that proves that representation in film is not only important, but can be extraordinarily profitable, according to the Verge. Preceded by the success of DCâs âWonder Womanâ, which had the most successful box office opening weekend of any film directed by a woman, âBlack Pantherâsâ success is a testament to the widening spectrum of superhero films, and the weight of diversification and representation.
