Behold, The Waifus Of Winter!
We are on the cusp of entering the spring season, which means that the latest collection of winter anime have either concluded or reached their halfway point. As such, we’ve been introduced and exposed to a whole slew of new characters, and its fair to say some have risen beyond all expectations, especially when it comes to this season’s leading ladies.
As such, we’ll be counting down our picks for the top three best girls of winter 2018; the ones who blew us away with their actions and attitudes when facing down all manner of opposition in their respective series.
Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!Â
#3: Zero Two
“Darling in the Franxx” (2018)
Devious, sensual and layered with emotional scarring, Zero Two is a hybrid of human and klaxosaur, one who is feared just as much as she is needed. While every other parasite is governed by Papa’s laws, Zero Two easily stands out of the crowd with her rebellious nature, as well as her desire towards the unremarkable Hiro, who she has marked as her new ‘darling’. Her monstrous origins, sexual confidence and general bad girl demeanour doesn’t exactly paint her as a noble hero, which is sort of the reason we can’t help but love every moment she’s on screen.
#2: Miki Makimura
“Devilmay Crybaby” (2018)
While she may be athletic and naturally beautiful, Miki’s greatest trait is just how pure of a person she is. Her earnest love for Akira and her friends cemented her as the only true “good” person in a series that was littered with sin, demons and death. She was Akira’s anchor, his one reason to keep fighting for humanity, and by extension became ours as well. That’s what made her death all the more harrowing. As we watched a mad world swallow up the most innocent soul of them all, the series’ central theme of despair reared its head and hit us hard. We’ll never forget you Miki.
#1: Violet Evergarden
“Violet Evergarden” (2018)
A former soldier with limited understanding of human emotion and social norms, Violet was more akin to a doll than a person. However, following the final words of her commander, she becomes determined to comprehend their true meaning. This leads her to become an Auto Memory Doll; a ghostwriter known for writing exquisite letters that convey the true emotions of a client. Through each encounter, Violet is exposed to the whole emotional spectrum, and as a result slowly starts to change from soulless drone to a woman of the world. As naive as she is broken, no one knows how to make us burst into tears quite like Violet.
