From Agent Coulson, to Bucky Barnes, to Nick Fury, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for killing beloved characters only to bring them back immediately. Well okay, that’s not always the case, as Quicksilver, Peggy Carter, and Yondu likely aren’t being resurrected anytime soon. Plus, Avengers: Infinity War is bound to offer a few major causalities. Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy is an interesting case, however.
As we all know, the three-like creature bravely sacrificed himself to save his friends in the first film, but came back cuter than ever as a sapling. Director James Gun has now confirmed, though, that Baby Groot is actually Groot’s son, meaning OG Groot is dead.
The filmmaker mentioned this on Twitter when a fan wrote, “But you can grow Groot back, as evidenced in your film. Once you kill a porg, it’s gone.” Gunn subsequently replied, “First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.”

Up until this point, audiences have argued whether or not Groot technically died in Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s similar to when Harvey Dent fell to his death in The Dark Knight, although his demise was somewhat up for debate until Christopher Nolan clarified it. Now Gunn has stated for the record that Groot really did meet his end.
While it’s sad to think that Groot died, at least his sacrifice wasn’t in vein. Plus, if Groot had lived, we wouldn’t have gotten Baby Groot, which means we wouldn’t have gotten what’s arguably the greatest opening credits sequences ever!
We can look forward to seeing more of Groot in Infinity War, which hits theaters on May 4, not to mention Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to come out in 2020.
