Jon Favreau, best known for directing the first two Iron Man movies and Disney’s live-action Jungle Book remake, will be tackling the Star Wars franchise next. According to StarWars.com, Lucasfilm has hired the filmmaker to executive produce and write a live-action series set in a galaxy far, far away. The show will be part of Disney’s new streaming service, which is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
âI couldnât be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,â Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated. âJon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.â
Favreau additionally stated, “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldnât have believed you. I canât wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.â
This won’t be the first time Favreau has been involved in a Star Wars project. He voiced Pre Vizsla on the Clone Wars animated series and is set to appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which hits theaters on May 25, 2018. Also, when he played Pete Becker on Friends, it’s mentioned that his character has two life-sized Imperial stormtroopers from Sharper Image. In addition to this new Star Wars series, Favreau is also directing Disney’s live-action Lion King remake, which comes out on July 19, 2019. A release date has yet to be set for the Star Wars streaming series. With Star Wars Rebels recently coming to an end, though, this live-action show can’t come soon enough.
