Frances McDormand delivered arguably the most memorable speech at the 90th Academy Awards, most notably shining a light on the term “Inclusion Rider.” In a backstage interview, the Best Actress winner explained that this “means that you can ask for and/or demand at least 50% diversity in not only the casting but also the crew.” Since then, “Inclusion Rider” has been making the rounds on social media and Hollywood is taking notice. Actor Michael B. Jordan most notably pledged to fight for diversity at his film production company.
“In support of the women & men who are leading this fight, I will be adopting the Inclusion Rider for all projects produced by my company Outlier Society,” Jordan shared on Instagram. “Iâve been privileged to work with powerful woman & persons of color throughout my career & itâs Outlierâs mission to continue to create for talented individuals going forward.”
Jordan can currently be seen as Killmonger in Black Panther, which recently became one of the ten biggest movies ever at the domestic box office, as well as the highest-grossing film from an African American director. In addition to Jordan, “Inclusion Rider” has also been recognized by the likes of Oscar-winner Brie Larson and even Merriam-Webster.

ð'Inclusion' is our top search on the night, followed by 'cinematography,' 'in memoriam,' 'feminism,' and 'rider.' #Oscars

One notable person who hasn’t gotten onboard with “Inclusion Rider,” however, is Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “Weâre not so big on doing everything through agreements,” Hastings stated at a press meeting (via USA Today). “Weâre trying to do things creatively.”
Jordan’s Outlier Society is actually developing a family sci-fi drama series for Netflix called Raising Dion. Could Hastings’ statement and Jordan’s pledge lead to some behind the scenes conflict? In any case, “Inclusion Rider” is a term we’ll be hearing a lot of in the years to come.
