According to The New York Times, the former President and First Lady are in negotiations with Netflix to produce multiple high-profile shows. These programs reportedly won’t aim to attack President Trump and the Republican Party. Rather, the Obamas would be paid for exclusive content with inspirational stories at their core.
“President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,†said Eric Schultz, Barack Obama’s senior adviser. “Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.â€
A few ideas for shows have already been discussed, including one where Barack Obama moderates conversations on health care, climate change, and other issues he tackled as POTUS. Another show would focus on Michelle Obama discussing topics near to her heart like nutrition. The Obamas may additionally put their name on a few Netflix documentaries and shows that coincide with their beliefs.
Mr. Obama could potentially draw in big numbers for Netflix, seeing how he has over 101 million followers on Twitter. This also wouldn’t be the first time Mrs. Obama has ruled the small screen, as she’s made guest appearances on shows like Parks an Recreation, iCarly, and Sesame Street. It’s unclear how much money they stand to make from this Netflix deal, although Ryan Murphy just signed up with the streaming service for $300 million.
