Sun, Sea and Slaughter
Video games excel when it comes to transporting us to destinations we could only dream of. Given the leaps and bounds they have made in terms of visuals, you’d be forgiven for wanting to jump through the screen and experience the lavish environments for yourselves. Well, to that we say you’d better be careful what you wish for. They may look like a slice of paradise on the surface, but just around the corner is enough nightmare fuel to put you off even stepping outside your house again.
While we’re certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to dangerous video game settings, we’re looking at the locations that look like they would make for optimal tourists spots…until you realise that you’ve essentially stepped on a landmine!
#3: Los Santos
“Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)
This sprawling metropolis looks like the ideal destination to splash some cash and enjoy its numerous facilities. Unfortunately, unless your name is Michael, Franklin or Trevor then you’re liable to find yourself getting taken out. Given the amount of bank robberies, car chases, assassinations and firefights that occur in this city, its fair to say that it sucks to be a civilian. Even if you don’t end up getting caught by a stray bullet, you’re just as likely to meet one of Los Santos’ many resident psychos.
#2: Banoi Island
“Dead Island” (2011)
Much like how we were taken by this game’s epic cinematic trailer, you shouldn’t let first looks fool you. Sure, you could get yourself a lovely tan by the beach, but you still have to deal with an endless horde of zombies everywhere you go. The game itself certainly has an infamy edge to it given the underwhelming final product in spite of such strong marketing, but it doesn’t change the fact that out of all the zombie-infested destinations in gaming, this particular premise still feel us with a lingering sense of dread!
#1: Rook Island
“Far Cry 3” (2012)
The locals, the wildlife, the flora, literally everything on this island wants you dead. From its shark-infested seas, to the numerous killer cats all the way to the main madman himself, Vaas. The only way to get by in this place is snatch a weapon, inject yourself with more drugs than the human body can handle and give into the insanity. While it makes for a breath-taking video game experience, we can’t exactly say that it’s the ideal place to take the wife and kids for a couple of weeks.
