They Certainly Got The Monster Part Right…
Whether you look back on this franchise with fond nostalgia or are still eagerly awaiting the next entry in the Tri saga, Digimon has certainly managed to cement itself as a series that not only managed to escape from Pokemon’s shadow, but also put a fun spin on the genre thanks to a narrative that wasn’t afraid to go to some dark places.
Over the course of its various incarnations, the anime didn’t only provided all manner of lighthearted battles, but also exposed both the Digidestined and the audiences to the dark side of the Digital World. Some of these plot threads were so mature in nature that they still haunt longtime fans, with these three standing at the creepy pinnacle!

#3: Leomon’s Death
It had been established early on that Digimon don’t really die, they just end up returning to their infant forms. That being said, when the proud Leomon met his end, it was nothing short of harrowing. After trying to defend Jeri, he found himself cut down by the ruthless Beelzemon, who in a burst of rage impaled him with his claw. What followed was a heartfelt goodbye between tamer and partner as Leomon slowly faded from existence right before Jeri’s eyes.
#2: The Dark Ocean
Kari has always been special among the Digidestined, which unfortunately means she often finds herself hunted after by the more wicked Digimon for her power. Alas, her Crest of Light is rendered all but useless when she finds herself kidnapped and taken to the forsaken land known as the Dark Ocean, inhabited by creatures who seek to make her their queen. Yes, it is as creepy as it sounds, made all the worse when get a glimpse of their so-called master.
#1: Jeri’s Nightmare
Following the death of Leomon, Jeri is left in turmoil. As a result, the insidious creature known as the D-Reaper feasts on her grief in order to find a way to invade the real world. As her anguish intensifies, she is plagued with nightmares that focus on her mother’s passing as well as her Digimon’s demise, some of which just so happen to contain rather hellish imagery. Season Three did not hold back any punches.
