Top 3 Pokemon Protagonists That Could Replace Ash

Give Someone Else A Turn!

For decades now, the face of the Pokemon franchise has been none other than the eternal ten year old; Ash Ketchum. Don’t get us wrong, he’s had some great moments over the course of this monstrously long-running series, but considering he’s still not managed to become a Pokemon Master after twenty years of being on the road, we think it’s high time he moved over and hand the spotlight over someone else

Believe it or not, there have been multiple spin-off shows that didn’t feature Ash as a protagonist, and we have to say the experience was very refreshing. As such, we feel that these characters would be perfect candidates to take over Ash’s position!

#3: Jimmy

Essentially the anime-equivalent of the main character from Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, Jimmy managed to score himself a mini-series that saw him saving the legendary dog Raikou while also taking on Team Rocket. As it happens, these particular Rocket grunts were infinitely deadlier than Jessie, James and Meowth, which led to a pretty epic brawl. He was a cocky, too-cool-for-school kind of trainer, but was endearing all the same. Needless to say,  Jimmy and Marina deserve a chance to continue their journey!

#2: Detective Looker

He only made a handful of appearances in the original anime as well as the Pokemon Generations series, but that was more than enough to sell us on his credibility as a lead character. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to have a series focusing on the antics of a detective who solves mysteries and chases down evil organisations? It would certainly be a step up from constantly cycle of gym battles. Plus, it would allow the show some leeway to provide just a little extra grit and substance to its narrative!

#1: Red

The original Pokemon protagonist finally got a chance to shine in animated form with the release of Pokemon Origins. Despite being a four-episode series, it’s chronicling of Red’s journey from his humble begins all the way to becoming champion was a delight to watch. Given how it stuck close to the original game, we would love to see an extended version that showed Red taking on all the major moments. He’s already proven he’s a better trainer Ash in a fraction of the time, even capturing a Mewtwo on his first try!
