Top 3 Video Game Storytellers

Lend Them Your Ears

Whether they’re pulling out little anecdotes, going into great detail about the lore of their respective world or just spilling endless waves of exposition, every video game has at least one character tasked with enrapturing the player with their storytelling swag.

While having a NPC spew in-game information can come across as annoying, certain characters have managed to twist this trope to their advantage. Whether by using sheer force of personality or just keeping things short and sweet, we could quite happily listen to these three tattle on for hours on end.

#3: Druth
“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” (2017)

With Senua in a constant mental war with her inner demons, she’s certainly doesn’t have a lot of room for allies. That is until a new voice enters her head, one of a crazed old colleague who she knew in her youth. Needless to say, Druth is a little on the wacky side, since he apparently spent a lot of years being tortured in the most horrendous of ways. Still, it hasn’t seemed to have dampened his ability to tell a terrifying tale, as his recounting of Norse mythology is wholly investing.

#2: Mimir
“God of War” (2018)

What can we say? Norse mythology makes for a great conversation topic. A former adviser to Odin, Mimir was rescued from an eternity of pain by Kratos…by slicing his head off. From there, he joined the father and son duo, providing knowledge and biting wit along the way. His tales of the Aesir Gods and their debauchery could be heartbreaking at times, while his uplifting stories of the Giants made the world feel all the richer. It’s fair to say that without this talking head, this amazing game would have done itself a disservice.

#1: Varric Tethras
“Dragon Age: Inquisition” (2014)

The most unconventional of Dwarf characters to ever exist, Varric wasn’t only an expert marksman but also a best-selling author. As a result, he’s a master of the written-word and certainly isn’t afraid to use it. While he’s not one for explaining the history of Thedas, he’s more than happy to take the antics of his companions and twist them into writing material. His tales are both profoundly funny and filled with heart, much like Varric himself. Just make sure you don’t mention Hard in Hightown 2.
