No Amount Of Counselling Is Going To Fix These Pairings
Nobody is perfect, not even superheroes. Whether it’s dealing with some deep-rooted issues, struggling to keep their identities secret or the constant influx of villains, there are times where no amount of masks or capes can hide how painfully human these characters are. Normally they’re able to lean on the likes of their spouses and partners in order to help balance the turmoil that comes with their line of work…except when it comes to these particular duos. Whether it’s terrible chemistry or cases of abuse, these five couples should do themselves and the world a favour by breaking up for good!
Fair warning, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!
#5: Cyclops and Jean Grey
While they’re supposed to be the X-Men’s ultimate power couple, these two have in truth had quite the rocky relationship. Even if you take Wolverine and his feral crush on Jean out of the equation, you still have multiple incidences of Cyclops having to deal with his beloved constantly dying and being brought back to life. That can leave anyone a little shaken, though we certainly don’t advocate starting a psychic affair with Emma Frost as a coping mechanism.
#4: Spider-Man and Black Cat
They could have been the envy of New York couples everywhere, yet they only managed to push each other away. Unwilling to compromise his morals, Spidey was never able to fully return Cat’s feelings, who in turn couldn’t imagine ever settling down and abandoning her thieving ways. Things only got worse when their flirting took a turn towards pure antagonism when Cat became a vicious crime-boss after Doc Ock’s turn as the Superior Spider-Man shattered their relationship almost completely.
#3: The Comedian and Silk Spectre
Now things are starting to get twisted. Turns out that even in his glory days, the Comedian still had something of a psychotic edge to him. While trying to make a move on the original Silk Spectre, he ends up getting firmly rejected, first with words and then a physical rebuttal to the face. So what does he do? Beats the crap out of her before trying to attempting to violate her. Thankfully he’s stopped by the other heroes before things go any further. How they ended up having a kid together later down the line is something we still don’t understand.
#2: Giant-Man and the Wasp
Throughout numerous incarnations, Hank Pym has been shown to have a tendency for domestic abuse towards his beloved wife Janet The most egregious incident was during his run in the Ultimates story-line, where he was show to not only to be unafraid of laying a hand on her, but he also used his technology to set an army of ants upon her after she had shrunk down to her Wasp size to try and escape. That is an uncomfortable level of darkness right there…
#1: The Joker and Harley Quinn
They may not be super and they certainly aren’t heroes, but we can’t think of a relationship in all of comics that’s most ill-conceived, manipulative and painful to behold than the one between the Clown Prince of Crime and his number one henchwoman. By making her fall for his crazy sense of humor, the Joker was able to turn Harleen Quinzel into a tool that he could use and discard whenever he pleased, yet she always came crawling back to him. It’s bad joke that refuses to fade.
